The Ramones started punk rock. There were influences before them, but with The Ramones came the term "punk."

On a related note, who do you think the first band to get called "Hardcore Punk" was then ??

I'd say Vancouver's D.O.A

Was that Joey Shithead's band? I'd have to say it's between them and the Mentors.

That's the one....I think they are still around too, just with different members and Joey.

Totally agreed. The Ramones played power pop with fast guitars and goofy lyrics. There was no hatred, no venom, no, defiance, no "fuck you all" message in their music. Johnny Rotten would usher in a new era... and music was never quite the same. The Who and Zeppelin suddenly seemed like boring, mellow old men compared to the Pistols.
