Germans flock to see Hitler film

More than 100,000 German filmgoers flocked to see a controversial big-budget movie about Adolf Hitler on its opening night on Thursday.
The Downfall, shown on 400 screens, stars Swiss actor Bruno Ganz as the Nazi leader and sparked debate about portraying Hitler with a human side.

Ex-German Chancellor Helmut Kohl has hailed it as a way for young people to be reminded of the horror of Hitler.

The £9m film's makers said they were happy young and old had gone to watch.

Critics were divided over the film, which details the end of the Third Reich leading up to Hitler's suicide in his bunker on 30 April 1945.

German historian Hans Mommsen said: "Reducing history to stories about people is not suitable for gaining an understanding of the greater historical process."

But British historian and Hitler biographer Ian Kershaw said: "Of all the portrayals of Hitler, this is the first which I found convincing."

The film will be shown throughout continental Europe and in Japan. Producers are also hoping to distribute it in North America and Britain.

Why not? The world needs this lesson right now. Nobody believes that they are evil. Not Hitler. Not Bush. Not Osama. Not Saddam. Not Putin. Not Sharon. Not Arafat. They're all humans doing what they think is right, impossible as it may be for their victims to believe, with good intentions feeling they have perfectly reasonable justifications. To mentally write-off an enemy as simply "evil" puts you at a disadvantage when trying to solve problems such as those we face today.

As odd as this may seem, Germans actually know very little about the Nazi regime. It's even illegal for them to possess a copy of Mein Kampf. Their knowledge is basically limited to this:

1) Versailles Treaty screws Germany after WWI
2) Hitler promises to scrap Versailles Treaty
3) Hitler elected and later voted chancellor for life
4) Germany and Russia invade Poland, splitting it up between them. As a result, England and France declare war on Germany.
5) Hitler goes crazy and gasses Jews, Gypsies, Commies, etc.

And if they dare question any part of the story, they face jail time...

What the fuck are you talking about? Not nice to see a Neonazi on this board. People like you seemed to have learned nothing from history if you reduce the 3rd Reich to some minor fuckup.

How dare you tell people you would go to jail if you question any part of the story. You might go to jail if you openly state and try to convince others that the holocaust was a lie and no jews were killed. The other reason might be if you publish nazi propaganda.
