Juicy... we got a St Bernard pup about a year ago.. they don't fully mature til they're 3 years old..
For maintenance - well, if you live ina really hot area, it probably wouldn't be cool to have one.. otherwise, if you have the budget, just send them to a groomer every couple weeks (no matter what breed you choose) - then you're helping the local economy as well For Chick Appeal - We get stopped by EVERYONE with our dog. Cos St Bernard's aren't 'regular' to be seen - so our dog Shmoo is almost a mini-celebrity where we live. So no DOUBT you would get some action just purely by walking them.. and pups are the coolest... especially as they grow... people love to see MONSTER pups Average St Bernard - 180lbs or so fully grown (biggest one on record that I know of is 330lbs though.. )Food bill - They only eat as much as a Golden Retriever cos they're LAZY dogs Shedding - yes they do Slobber - yes they have lots, but it's part of their charm Manliness - you can't get a manlier dog.. The Keg around their necks? - YOU PUT YOUR WEED IN THERE!! (and who is going to question a St Bernard? !!! Or try a Rotty if you're going for the manly look.. but it depends on if you want chicks to approach.. cos if that's what you want, you have to combine the manliness with cuteness.. as for poodles.. isn't the poodle the 'dog' for Navy SEALS? I heard that somewhere before.. thought it was odd, but poodles are surprisingly strong and versatile dogs No matter what, good luck.. selecting your best friend for the next 10-15 years is a very important thing to do right with as much info as you can possibly get...

your dog should come with papers and it's first shots. make sure you take it to the vet a couple of weeks after you have it and most importantly, BE PATIENT with this dog. it will go to the bathroom all over but it's up to you to take the time out and train it. usually a puppy will go to the bathroom almost immediately after it eats. you should feed it 3 times a day and 10 mins after each feeding, take it to the paper so it can go to the bathroom. usually dogs will not go where they sleep so buy yourself a cage/carrier, put down a soft blanket, make sure this is located in a warm part of the room, and place the dog in there. this carrier/cage should have a sizable opening so that it can see you. also, if you dont want to have to take it out in the middle of the night, pull up its water an hour before bed. this is like having a child without all the problems. |

Shots - make sure they've been dewormed too, and find a good vet in your local area for if you decide to get the pup spayed/neutered (smart if you're not breeding, especially if you get a bitch - otherwise they're DAMN messy to clean up after and you have all the horny dogs in the neighbourhood harrassing you cos they want a piece of her) Purebreeds pricing varies.. once you've selected the breed you want you should get in touch with AKC for recommended breeders in your area, they know the good ones, that way you won't wind up buying one from a puppy farm, they'll also be able to give you a rough indication of what a standard cost would be for the breed you're seeking. Lots of breeders have dogs that aren't quite up to best standard for showing and they sell those often with a slight discount, and if you're not interested in showing or breeding them it helps you get a top quality dog (temperament and health) for a little bit less. Some breeds have hip problems.. once you've decided on teh breed, find out if yours does, and then you'll probably want to see a hip score for both parents of the puppy and perhaps the puppy itself if it's old enough. Others have other health problems - the breeder should be able to give you the heads up on all this if they're good. Never pick the runt if you CAN avoid the cuteness and 'sympathy' angle, always go for strength and exuberance, but nothing TOO exuberant or you may end up with an ADD puppy on your hands.. Hope that helps.. picking out a pet is one of life's pleasures.. enjoy it!!

I have a faggish dog.
Whatever you do, get an older dog if you can. A puppy WILL shit all over everything, pee on everything, destroy everything. Seriously. I'm constantly cleaning up after her. She shreds magazines and newspapers if you leave them anywhere (including on the coffee table). She chews shoes, table legs, baseboards, etc. (she's teething) Potty training takes lots of patience. Go to the Humane Society and tell them that you want a cool dog, low maintenance, potty trained, etc. They'll get you a good one that fits your lifestyle.

I have a beagle...a bit hard to train at first, but very low maintenance. If you want low maintenance make sure you get something with short hair.
