It could happen to you.... but only in Texas

The National Transportation Safety Board recently divulged their joint venture with the US auto makers for the past five years. The NTSB covertly funded a project whereby the auto makers were installing black boxes in four wheel drive pickup trucks in an effort to determine, in fatal accidents, the circumstances in the last 15 seconds before the crash. They were surprised to find in 49 of the 50 states the last words of drivers in 61.2% of fatal crashes were, "Oh, Shit!"

Only the state of Texas was different, where 89.3% of the final words were, "Hey Y'all, hold my beer and watch this!"

Yeeehawww maw!

I saw something on MSNBC last night where a Texas State Legislator (I forget her name, but she was awesome. She stood up in front of a panel of other lawmakers, pointed her hand like a gun at one of them and asked the man she was pointing her "gun" at if he would like the lawmaker sitting 2 down from him to be able to have a concealed weapon) is pushing to allow teachers to carry firearms to school. I think it's a great idea, myself (my mother is a teacher). How many kids would come to school with a gun if they thought their teachers were armed, themselves. Several other lawmakers are completely opposed to this idea, though. I guess they like the idea of having kids kill other kids and teachers.

Yes,

I am sure that is the reason for their opposition. Perhaps you did not see the other 20/20 or dateline report that showed that almost all teen males would pick up a REAL (but disabled )gun and play with it, even load it (WITH REAL BULLETS) and point at at a friend when they found it. Even parents that SWORE Their kid would never do it, watched in disbelieve as their kid picked up a gun and loaded it.

Children of Police officers die every year from finding their guns. Some of these have been trained on how to use guns and still screw up.

Maybe those legislature don't want teachers that can't even pass basic reading and writing tests in some cases carrying loaded guns to schools were kids can find them and kill each other.

More people die each year through accidents than will ever be saved from the proper use of handguns.

I am not saying I wouldn't want my mother to carry a gun, but to suggest that there is a simple solution is incorrect.

That woman was clearly hurt by that whole luby's incident. She might be fine carrying a gun around, but that isn't the case with everyone.

I am not trying to start a fight on the second ammendment, but there are two sides to every story. In some respects I believe that people should be able to defend themselves, but your chances of using a gun to defend yourself are like 60 less likely than it being used to harm someone either by accident or whom you care about.

I know at least four people killed by guns by accident. I know no one that has used a gun to defend himself (other than a cop).

ChrisR... I had forgotten about that 20/20 report. Good point. Of course I was being sarcastic about saying that they were wanting kids to kill other kids (though I would seriously suspect that every school has at least a handful of kids that the teachers would prefer to do without), but when kids know that weapons are not allowed in a school it gives them the extra confidence that they will be able to successfully shoot whover it happens to be that has "earned" their wrath. Our lawmakers make the whole case out to be something along the lines of if they get rid of firearms then everyone would be safe. This is not the case. We heard on the news here in the US when Australia banned all private ownership of firearms and it was touted as being a model for us to follow. They did not, however, report that when this ban went into effect that crime shot through the roof because the criminals knew that their intended law-abiding targets would not be able to defend themselves since they ARE law-abiding and turned in their weapons (and the news still refuses to publicly report this). In places here in the US where local governments passed laws allowing the citizens to carry concealed weapons, crime fell dramatically. All I am intending to convey through all of this is that if more private citizens were armed, more criminals would be afraid to practice their trades for fear of being shot, themselves. Think about this... 2 armed, masked men walk into a bank intent on robbing it. They point a gun at a teller, then all of the people standing in line at the bank point their weapons at the robbers. If this happened a couple of times and got positive media attention, how many people that were thinking of robbing a bank would reconsider that action?
Kush... I love Texas, too. I used to live in south Austin, myself. A little place off of I-35 called Onion Creek. (WAY south Austin)
