50 punk groups...

IratePrimate 09-16-2004 02:26 PM

Yeah, I'm throwing my two cents in and stating the Sex Pistols did not "invent" punk. I mean, shit, you had proto punk and glam bands going strong before the Sex Pistols; T. Rex, Iggy and the Stooges, MC5, Sweet, Roxy Music, The New York Dolls, The Neon Boys (who then broke up and became Television in 1974, and Richard Hell and the Voidoids), and of course, let's not forget, The Ramones, who were playing shows a full year before The Sex Pistols were formed. Oh and The Damned released an album in 1976 (before the Sex Pistols) considered the UK's first "punk" album.

My vote is for The Ramones for the purebreed Punk band, but overall I like The Velvets and Television a lot more.

Strung Out Rocks !

Bring Out Your Dead
One brief recollection of all the people in my life that have come and gone
One brief fleeting moment of people I've loved and people that I have wronged
Long lost are loved ones gone but this bird cannot seem to mend it's broken wings
so the Lust for life dissipated
and a new greed rises for the needful things.
Don't wanna think about it, I Indulge myself, distraction eases pain,
bury my Emotions to protect myself. till I can't feel a fucking thing
I've dared to dream I've tried to live, but I've played it safe again
Just another slave to my vices now, Bring out your dead
Voices wither and crack then die ringin' in my ear would sing me soft asleep
Deathly silence now is all I hear has inspiration finally eluded me
chorus
My addiction, my illness, my only trusted friend
My addiction my illness my only childhood fiend.
Your twisted warm embrace engulfing all I tried to be
My body's breaking under arms that will not set me free
Locked in this cage that I've built myself
constructed out of twisted cold reminders of a life once lost
But I've found my way again. Here among the wreckage and the vampires
I'll play it safe again, just another slave to my vices now.

i know about half the people in the bands on that list. if you asked any one of them, black flag would be in their top five list, if not their top band. the lead singer of Good Riddance, Russ, started a new band based around who... let me think... oh ya, the drummer of black flag, Bill Stevenson.

as far as greg ginn, i think that he was amazing

neewwman 09-16-2004 09:47 PM

Best? The Ramones.

Here's a couple of good ones no one's mentioned:

The Minutemen (if they count as punk)
Flipper

HA HA HA (by Flipper):

Isn't life a blast
it's just like living in the past
we go downtown to do our shopping
and we live in suburbia
and I say
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho
he he he he he he he he
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

What is there to do she said
and he said come on baby
and I'll show you a good time
so they went on down
to one of those cheap motels
and they got all gushy and wet
and I say
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho
he he he he he he he he
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

chodadog 09-16-2004 10:36 PM

I couldn't choose a favourite.

Bouncing Souls, NOFX, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Stooges, Lars & The Bastards, The Damned, Bad Religion, The Bronx, Black Star Brigade, Guttermouth, Dropkick Murphys, Rancid, The Living End, Flogging Molly, Sham 69, Joykiller, Descendents, Zeke, Agnostic Front, New Bomb Turks, Suicidal Tendencies, Black Flag, Vandals..

My favourite would change from day to day, but out of those, i'm probably listening to the new bomb turks and the dropkick murphys more than the others.

xxxdesign-net 09-16-2004 10:43 PM

Rancid...

Varius 09-16-2004 10:58 PM

For some modern ones:

NUFAN (punk-emo, but atleast they're not pop-emo :1orglaugh )
NOFX
The Offspring (I'd still call their older stuff punkish....)
Rancid
Sick of it All
Living End
Nerf Herder
Dwarves
Voodoo Glow Skulls
New Bomb Turks
Wayne Kramer
Osker
Ten Foot Pole
Millencolin
Dropkick Murphys (for some irish pub fun!)
Aquabats
Suicicdal Tendencies
Pennywise (for their great cover songs)
Frenzal Rhomb

Those should do for now ;p

SilverTab 09-16-2004 11:05 PM

i growed up listening those guys :)
ive seem almost all those band live
but lets clarify my answer
if you talk about new school punk
strung out are the best
for the old school, humm i seriously dont know, i like some old stuff, Circle Jerks, Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Clash... but i seriously think that the worst videoclip made by a punk band is TV Party by Black Flag

Ugh, Sex Pistols suck so bad. They're like Blink 182 would be today. Punk was the image to them. A bunch of rich arrogant motherfuckers. The only one in the band who had any punk in him was sid cause he went for the junk and not the glamour.

The Clash was a great band. They practically invented(and stayed) DIY punk rock. They were the ones making their own clothes and wearing whatever when every hahahaha out there was wearing a studded jacket. Fuck fashion punk.

Punk's really died out and turned into a suburban thing. The real punk movement went towards hardcore. Bad Brains, DK, stuff like that, or they went towards the oi/skinhead scene. Or both like all the NY Hardcore bands that are still playing(Agnostic Front).

Anyone who's been around saw the evolution. People pissed their life away, friends died, the lingering real punks died off and left a bunch of fashionable mohawk guys hangin around CBGB's being all artsy and counterculture. The ones that stuck around through all the shit formed New York Hardcore and that's where punk is today.

I agree, The Ramones are the greatest punk band ever. Dead Boys, New York Dolls and The Stooges are my personal favorites though.
