Win2K Freezes -- making a log in win2k

any of you wiz can help me out here?

I got a new 1.2 ghz thunderbird, with a new mother board, and some new ram...

it ran smootrhly (after a ton of tweaking, thanks to mACROSHIT's auto detection of hardware,)

but now, I noticed it crashes.... sort of freezes... that is not normal LOL

but I do not know if it's something I installed recently, or if it's the hardware (since it's not 1 month old)

so do you guys know of any way I could test to see if it's the hardware, or if it's the software.. and if the latter, to know which one causes that... I was thinking maybe there's some log programs that can run and I would know where to look for... if so, where are such things?

btw, I haven't spotted what exactly makes it bug...

first time, I hit enter to change url in IE... the other time, I was listening to music in winamp and I was typing a msg on this board.. and the last time I was watching a movie, not even on the computer..

thanks guys

need more info? let me know!

There's been a well known bug in TrackVerdun.DLL since Win 3.11, and MS has refused to patch it.

I think if you upgrade to IE 4.1 128 bit security, then disable javascript, but be sure to install MSN wallet software, then things work.

UNLESS, you're on SP 3 Win NT 4, at which point install the ATI drivers for the All in wonder card from a command line ONLY. Then remove the card with some BBQ tongs and put it in a shed. Do not look at the card for 3 weeks, then quickly put it back in wrapped in tinfoil. Turn the computer upside down. Leave it along for 8 minutes, then quickly apply mayonnaise to the front panel.

There, that should do it.

ATI Rules!

And Miracle Whip is better!

If you added a bunch of plugins recently or small progs, remove them and add them one at a time slowly over several days. See if one does the same thing to you. Sometimes that will work out. 3rd party stuff can really screw with things when it changes new files to old versions.

Listen, if you dont post your hardware manufacturers and part numbers how do you think anyone will help you here?

in this order.

CPU Brand, Model Number, Revision Number
Mother Board Manufacturer, Rev Number
Chipset Number, Revision,
Micro-code Version and revision (ie Bios)
RAM used, Manufacturer, Model, Amount
Controlers IDE/SCSY/ revision, Bios, Version Manufacturer
VideoCard used, Bios, Revision
Other Peripheral (audio, lan, mouse ...)

Only then, when you are aware of this, you can lookup the apropriate newsgroup to find if their are issues with signals, hangs, imcompatibilities or other monstruosities.

And then you can come and ask for a "workAround"

Seriously, how do you expect anyone to give you a serious answer when we dont even know what you have!

wizdom, with all due respect, even if I give out my parts, it won't change a thing... I know there's an issue with my sound card and my motherboard, but I fixed it..

all I asked for was for program to test it, or for a log maker or something like that

1.2ghz amd

Abit kt7-a Raid latest bios
Marvel G200-TV with the latest g200 drivers (they don't have the g200-tv drivers for 2k/millenium yet)
Mx300 Sound Card (vortex 2 drivers)

and the network card which I'd have to check and don't want to

I still don't know if you have a DDR system or a SDRAM !

It is very possible that HEAT is the problem.

I agree with Gemini, check your software one by one. But dont forget to do the same thing with your hardware. There isnt impossible that there is something wrong with the RAM-memory. If you have more than one memory-module, try to run with one at a time to see if it one of them who hangs your computer.

GOOD LUCK!!

My tip - your PSU isn't strong enough to handle the load. How strong is it ?

Win2k doesn't just freeze !

I do not think it is the RAM - if something was wrong with the RAM,

a. your computer either wouldn't even show the BIOS info screen,
b. give you crap during the RAM check during boot up or
c. wouldn't recognize parts of it. You would notice.

oh, my power supply is strong enough

I have that SUPER Tall case, room for like 8 fans... believe me, that shit is killing

I know win2k just doesn't freeze... that's what pisses me off..

I tried getting off some of the stuff that was new... I reinstalled it, let's see...

thing is, in explorer, it would crash once in a while as well.. fuckin' weird... but I heard from some peoople it's service pack 2 that's buggy.. .we'll see in the upcoming day/days if this crash without the other software running...

ok.. this shit keeps freezing..

I am almost 100% sure it's not software now... for one, win2k doesn't freeze with software problems, and 2- it would have shown me some BSOD or error message at least once... but it just keeps on freezing..

any way I can double check to see WHAT causes such a crash? any log utility or something that tests every peripherals?

OK, I found an application that made my system crash 3 times todayin about an hour time...

it's Called audiograbber... if you guys know this tool..

it takes the audio track off of a CD, and transfer them into WAV files, or , with a mp3 encoder, directly to MP3....

well, it runs fine for a few mins, but then crash..

so what do you guys think it is? Sound card? DVD ROM?

I got a mx300 card... my board is a kt7a-raid, and the dvd is creative encore 3

uhm, I fear it could be the cpu as well..

just RE-CRASHED with nothing much running.. checked the cpu temp it was 48°C.... uhm...

I'll go Replug everything in making sure all the contacts are perfect see if this helps, and I'll hook up an extra fan over the cpu to see if this can help...

btw, just making sure I hook it up perfectly...
the Fan must BLOW on the cpu, or DRAW air from it (not the fan DIRECTLY ON it.. the extra on that is hooked ABOVE it,

If it ran smoothly for a while...what was the last thing you did?
How many of those eight fans do you have in that case?
Do you have a fan right on the CPU?
Where do you keep your case?
Sounds like a build up of heat somewhere....you've got some pretty hefty programs running.
You might run it without the cover for a while and see what happens.
I'm no Win2k expert, as we run NT....
Good luck to you, though...I know this is very frustrating.

You should just upgrade your PC,
You need at least a 1.9 GHZ computer and 2 gigs of ram, you are short. Good bye.
