Anyone have satellite internet access?
I was wondering if anyone uses satellite internet access? I can't get cable and the dsl line I am on can only get 144k (it's an IDSL).
I saw a deal on the direcpc thing. I was all over the site and it says 392k for download but I know the upload speed isn't as fast. And you can only use one computer. I thought about getting a T1 line installed but haven't a clue about how to get that done. Anyone have any experience with satellite internet access? |

I don't know about sat links, but you have to call the phone company about T1's and all of that stuff. Have a couple of drinks under your belt and keep the bottle uncapped... Some of their prices can blow your socks off.

Hi. I also live in Georgia and WOW...I thought our phone connection was bad...on a good day, we can get a screaming 24000...
We can't get cable nor do we have DSL here. T1's are very expensive, so that's out. We've had the one way satellite, but it still means dialing into Bell South for our connection. In all truth, as much as I hate Bell South...as long as I can do away with dial up...I'll take any speed satellite offers me. Our computers are all networked and we use NT...so, we bought an ME machine and installed WinGate Proxy. We also got DirecPc's family plan, not the business plan, because it gives us unlimited access, whereas the business plan does not. Right now, we have three computers hooked up to satellite. We've just ordered the two way dish, which, for us, is an upgrade....and, I'll let you know how it works...after we get it installed. I figure..as limited as our choices were...this was the only viable choice we had....and..from what I understand...satellite works fine as long as it doesn't rain too hard or get too foggy. Hell, I need a few hours off here and there, so I suppose that will be okay. ------------------ Sin-Text-Because text sells sex. |

Hey Sam
I read a story about sat connections about 6 months ago. It was about the european sat connections so not sure if there's a big difference in price and speed and such with the usa. They said the dish you need is quite expensive and so is the connection. And true with rain and fog there's a big chance you don't have a connection. T1 gives you a usualy a good and stable connection but will cost you more. Maybe the sat connections got better by now but I would have wait for cable. |

Before you go an purchase/install direcpc, make sure to call them up. I went thru all that shit, and they had no (zip, zero, nada) local dial-up numbers availaible for me. And, oh yeah, the panaramic mountain range along the horizon also made it a complete waste.
I'll need to spend some time with my sawzall before I move out of here. Unlike direc-tv (which can mount on regular EMT pipe), direcpc requires rigid pipe. Rigid is much thicker, stronger, heavier - and a pain in the ass to cut with a hacksaw. I did recently get an e-mail from Earthlik about a new co-op offer on direcpc. Maybe that would work out for you. But since I am moving in a few months, I'll sit tight, and see if DSL is available in my next neighborhood. |

Let me also mention...and, hopefully, I won't post twice like I did the last time..sorry about that....
There is no tech support for NT....fortunately, the sales person who told us there was..is no longer there...we've had one hell of a time with Direc Pc...but, we are in a situation where we have little choice. We live in rural Georgia and there is no hope of cable or DSL. Satellite is our only choice. In the beginning, DirecPc did have a dial up and then did away with it in early June, I'm thinking. Their only dial up was for Atlanta, so if you live there, you might have that option. If you do order from Direc Pc..may I direct you to the people who sell the product. Talk only to : Al Givens His email: [email protected] He is the only one we will talk to now. He's the only one there who knows what he's talking about. Good luck. ------------------ Sin-Text-Because text sells sex. |

Hi. With your Sprint service, are you still on dial up...or do you have two way? ------------------ Sin-Text-Because text sells sex. |
