here's a test to see if your computer is protected from hacking
here's a test to see if your computer is protected from hacking:
i can't give the exact urls, so follow my instructions: 1) visit http://www.grc.com/ 2) click image to enter 3) 1st test: under 'news & events' click on 'shields up!' 4) 2nd test: click 'test my shields' 5) 3rd test: click 'probe my ports' my results (with NIS enabled) are as follows: 1st test: says, 'greetings!', as opposed to 'greetings HQ!', so it can't read my username. 2nd test: can't connect, port 139 doesn't seem to exist, and can't connect to NetBIOS. 3rd test: all ports are stealth, same as if my computer was unplugged. believe me, you'll fail all these test if you have no firewall on your windows PC. fuck, it'll even show the folders you have shared. if you're sharing shit across your lan without a firewall, you're sharing it to everyone who can connect to the internet. protect yourself now, don't wait. ...and continue to visit www.grc.com , the guy is awesome. his site kicks-ass for hacking info; and that's the only way to protect yourself. ------------------ oh yeah, you should check out this page too (it's all about securing your network, sharing files and printers, on a windows PC): http://grc.com/su-bondage.htm [This message has been edited by HQ (edited 07-16-2001).] |

to leakTest and have had it for atleast 6 months. Also one to Ad-Aware. Also 4 or 5 port utiliities so, if I start getting probed from one address I start probeing the shit out of them, pinging them 100 times and acouple of other little nasty things. Jim |

i use w2k and i passed all the test, gibson uses the same test the last 2 years :-0 Anyway,it's true that win95,98/me surfers might experience such security holes. I don't use antivirus, i install it every 4-5 months,do the updates and i never have any virus. Then i uninstall it and forget it. It's like having sex without condom,if you fuck only virgins then you have less chances Aids to burn you.

jimmyf,
i just shot down black ice in boneprone's post with ya ![]() i should have posted about leaktest. i'll do it now: DOWNLOAD LEAKTEST also: http://grc.com/files/LeakTest.exe (27k) and read how to use it here: http://grc.com/lt/leaktest.htm (very simple, but remember to rename it to a program that's allowed access thru your firewall for a complete test.) i get fucking hit with subseven shit 3-10 times every day. is there any scare with this? or is my NIS totally blocking it? i'm assuming it is (if it's telling me it's blocking it that is.) |

HQ, ad-aware will detect any spyware
on your computer. Gibson did have one and turned it over to the people that has Ad-Ware and I guess they up-dated it. I know the first time I ran it found 26 on my computer. I guess they track were you surf so they can target you with Ad's, they might get your email address, don't really know. I know I use to get over 75 spam emails per day, it's taken me months to get them down to around 5. I just report them all to Spamcop. Jim |

i used conseal for some years, but it doesnt work with w2k (unless there's some new version now). I think with w2k you dont have to worry that much. A firewall can make you crazy from the requests you'll receive while kids test bo2k,sub7 and the rest trojan proggies.

Thanks for those tests! It only confirmed what I have thought before, that there is too much panic about hackers etc.. I have W/98 and no additional protecting software installed and I passed all the tests.

XM,
if you were on a lan sharing files, it would be a different story. lots of ppl and businesses, including myself, are sharing files over computers. you would have failed all the tests. try this: - share a folder - re-do the tests then you'll see your username come up, along with the folder name you are sharing! of course you have to have file sharing enabled or it defeats the purpose of sharing files. don't forget to disable it again once you are done if you don't need it. |
