$9 for a pack of 20 cigarettes

I don't smoke so lose track of the prices and am usually surprised how stupidly expensive they are.

Cigs in the UK are now around £5 ($9 or so) for a pack by a major brand. How the fuck can anyone even afford to smoke anymore?

Try petrol (gas).

Or car insurance, or mortages, or house prices, or anything compared to the average wage.

"Starter" homes in my home town in the UK used to be fairly good. 2 bed, garage kinda thing (semi detached maybe) for around 65,000 pounds.

You cannot buy anything there now (even an apartment) for under 140,000

Pertol is over $7 or so a gallon and yep to the house prices. We're looking into moving to mainland Europe because of that. It's a toss up between Italy and Spain at the moment. I prefer Spain but there's almost too many English there now and property prices there are far higher than they should be because of it.

Well I'm originally from Bournemouth, so you can imagne the fucking inflation there. It's sick.

I know a lot of my mates are really stuck. They're renting simply because they cannot get a loan anywhere close to what the average or even small house costs now.

Everything skyrocketted, except for wages.

I used to live on the South coast too. I moved up North not too long ago simply to save around £500 a month on rent. I'd far rather put the £500 into our moving fund than keep paying it for a place I didn't like much anyway.

Even up here though prices have crept up and are still twice the price of many places in Europe

The only (I believe) country in the world with a declining population as it's not 'fashionable' to have two kids despite so many being Catholic :D Makes for very cheap property in the more rural areas and besides that they have great food

To be honest, any part of Tuscany is nice. I love Florence because it's where my Father's from and I have a lot of family there.

Genoa is nice too.

It's a GTI - depending on the area he lives in, it could be even higher.

I think GTI's still top the list of most nicked cars, hence their premiums are huge.,

I personally think property is way overpriced at the moment in the uk, a lot of my friends who haven't got on the property ladder yet have little or no chance of being able to afford a house now.

Here in Birmingham prices have gone through the roof... even shitty areas where crime is high have seen sharp increases.

My own property has also doubled in value in the 3 years since I've bought it

Yup it's insane. My cousin just sold his tiny 2-bed flat which he bought for 68k for 147k.

It's in a so-so area of Poole as well. Fucking INSANE!

Probably the cigs that will kill you, not the price!

As Tipsy knows, I have been out of the UK for several years - Prices of everything are simply crazy:

A night out: beer, smokes, food will set you back 50-100 quid easily -

Here in Poland:
Cigarettes - dollar a pack
Beer - 30-40 pence a bottle (Beer here is bloody good stuff)
House prices - Very low (But rising very quickly)

At the end of the day - There are cheaper places than Uk - The hardest part of living in different countries is getting a good understanding of the different mentalities - Languages are pretty easy to learn -

Forget about Spain... They seem to have the highest inflation-rate I've ever seen. Pretty much because of the Euro I guess.

As I said above that's the problem. Southern Spain is becoming saturated with English and property prices are now reflecting that which is a huge pain. Even so - it's still a lot cheaper than the UK. And of course ignoring house prices the cost of living is still very, very low in comparison. Just a shame there's quite so many damn limeys there now

France would be great except for the red tape and taxes.

So...may well be Italy for us. They have good schools (probably our biggest priority at the moment), health system is OK, cost of living is on par with the UK if not a little cheaper and....house prices are very, very low if you don't mind being a little rural.

Oh - and they had a porn star for an MP. Gotta love any country that has porn stars in government

I smoke a pack+ a day and am really looking for motivation to quit. I'm not really bothered by the price as they cut it by like 10% a year ago to compete with our neighboring countries... but I hate being addicted to something.. and healthwise it might not be too bad a deal to stop either
