Blast, Mushroom Cloud Reported in N. Korea

By CHRISTOPHER TORCHIA, Associated Press Writer

SEOUL, South Korea - A large explosion rocked the northern part of North Korea (news - web sites), sending a huge mushroom cloud into the air on an important anniversary of the communist regime, South Korea (news - web sites)'s Yonhap news agency reported Sunday.

Citing an unidentified source in Beijing, Yonhap said the explosion happened on Thursday in Yanggang province near the border with China. The damage and crater left by the explosion in Kim Hyong Jik county was big enough to be noticed by a satellite, the source said.

"We understand that a mushroom-shaped cloud about 2.2 miles to 2.5 miles in diameter was monitored during the explosion," Yonhap quoted an unidentified diplomatic source in Seoul as saying.

North Korea was founded on Sept. 9, 1948. Leader Kim Jong Il uses the occasion to stage performances and other events to bolster loyalty among the impoverished North Korean population.

Experts have speculated that North Korea might use a major anniversary to conduct a nuclear-related test, though there was no immediate indication that the reported explosion on Thursday was linked to Pyongyang's efforts to develop nuclear weapons.

Kim Hyong Jik is reported to hold a major missile base. North Korea, which has a large missile arsenal and more than a million soldiers, is dotted with military installations.

South Korea's Unification Minister Chung Dong-young said Sunday the government is in the process of confirming reports that there were signs of an explosion in North Korea.

"I am not aware of details such as the size of the damage," he was quoted as saying by Yonhap after a National Security Council meeting.

On Saturday, North Korea said recent revelations that South Korea conducted secret nuclear experiments involving uranium and plutonium made the communist state more determined to pursue its own nuclear programs.

The South Korean experiments, conducted in 1982 and 2000, were likely to further complicate the already stalled six-nation talks aimed at dismantling the North's nuclear development. South Korea has said the experiments were purely for research and did not reflect a desire to develop weapons.

On April 22, train wagons at a railway station exploded in the North Korean town of Ryongchon, killing 160 people and injuring an estimated 1,300, according to some estimates. The blast was believed to have been sparked by a train laden with oil and chemicals that hit power lines.

The source in Beijing that told Yonhap about the explosion last week said it was reportedly bigger than the train explosion in Ryongchon.

Because South Korea is begging the United States not to do anything yet. In the event that the United States would take military action against North Korea, the South knows damn well that the few nuclear bombs the North has will be for South Korea. It is highly unlikely that North Korea has the capabilitie to deliver a nuclear weapon on the US...

Bush dropped the ball on this years ago and now we have to pay for another Bush mistake. North Korea has always been a much greater threat to the U.S. The PRK willingness to test a nuke above ground is a sign that they want immediate action. It will also force Japan and South Korea to move forward with their own programs. Current PRK missile technology can theoritcally hit the West Coast of the U.S. Kim is a mafiaoso. All he cares about is power and money. It is reported that the majority of Australia's illegal meth comes from North Korea. These aren't rational people. They starve their peasants. Again, Bush worried too much about Saddam and dropped the ball.

Iraq, Syria, Iran and North Korea have to be neutralized. In that order. Not only because they pose a threat to their neighbors, but also because they pose a threat to the world economy.

Yea so where are the fucking Bush supporters now? This is all the freaking proof you need to see to know North Korea was way more of the threat than Iraq could evet have been in Saddam's wettest dream.

N.Korea Blast Unlikely to Have Been Atomic-S.Korea Minister

SEOUL (Reuters) - A huge blast three days ago in North Korea was unlikely to have been a nuclear weapons test, South Korea's unification minister said on Sunday.

According to Yonhap news agency, Chung Dong-young told South Korean reporters after a National Security Council meeting that Seoul's assessment so far was the explosion was unlikely to have been linked to the North's nuclear arms ambitions.

If US attacks N. Korea then it eliminates the N. Korean threat in the region.

This would bring Asia one step closer to unifying as a block similar to the EU, and the US losing influence and dominance. As long as things remain unstable, Asian countries remain in the US sphere of influence.

American foreign policy isn't that difficult to understand.

The difference was Iraq has oil... the US dollar is backed by oil since going off the gold standard. Untill recently you virtually couldn't buy oil anywhere in the world unless you paid in US dollars. Now some countries are starting to accept payments in Euros. This is a major shift in the world econonmy and especially for the US.

Iraq had begun to sign deals with many european and russian companies to drill and sell oil in Euros. It was shortly after that the war began and guess what... Iraqi oil is now only sold in US dollars. The US is scrambling to maintain control over it's currency... the oil is not for the US and will not be burned in the US.. .it's purely economic. Funny how the mass media doesn't disseminate this info... but sometimes you can find it in the back of the business press.

2 reasons

2 - no oil

South Korea wants peace with the North... the North wants peace and start integrating into the world economy like China has... it's the US that is blocking any diplomatic solution.. they don't want it solved or they loose control. Same as Isreal. This is not rocket science.

A pre-emptive attack on North Korea would force China to defend its Asian hegemony and force an invasion against Taiwan. China currently buys over 30% of our debt. That would be an incredibly stupid move by Bush.

Nothing in the story says it was a nuke.

Conventional explosives can make a mushroom cloud.

OK OK OK...

IF this was a nuclear bomb, then I am MUCH MORE proned to believe it was a FLUKE and if not, then it was a very good attack (like expected now right before election day in the US) by the current US government to SLIP a bomb through the US media (did I say FOX NEWS???) to further FUCK the US election by SCARING US (yes, I am an AMERICAN citizen) SHITLESS like NORMAL.

Then again, I am just venting...

Yep. When a country cannot fight back and cause damage on US soil, there will be "war". When a country can fight back there will be compromise and diplomacy.

"South Korea's Yonhap news agency is reporting a huge explosion shook North Korea's northernmost province on Thursday producing a mushroom cloud over two miles (4 km) wide.

The blast coincided with the anniversary of North Korea's founding on Sepember 9 when various military activities are staged.

The U.S. official said the cloud could be the result of a forest fire."

SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) -- A large cloud that appeared over North Korea in satellite images several days ago was not the result of a nuclear explosion, according to a U.S. official.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency is reporting a huge explosion shook North Korea's northernmost province on Thursday producing a mushroom cloud over two miles (4 km) wide.

The blast coincided with the anniversary of North Korea's founding on Sepember 9 when various military activities are staged.

The U.S. official said the cloud could be the result of a forest fire.

South Korea's Unification Minister Chung Dong-yong said the government was aware of the reports and is checking them.

"I have no information about the size of the damage of the explosion," he said on Sunday, according to Yonhap.

Chung also said he believed there was no correlation between the explosion and reports of North Korea preparing for a possible nuclear test.

The New York Times reported on Saturday that U.S. President George W. Bush and his top advisers recently received intelligence reports that could indicate North Korea is preparing its first nuclear test, citing senior officials with access to the intelligence.

None of North Korea's known nuclear sites are in the country's northernmost provinces.

Yonhap reported the explosion happened in Yanggang province along the Chinese border, the site of Yongjori Missile Base -- a large facility with an underground missile firing range.

At least 161 people were killed in an explosion at Ryongchon Railway Station in April. It took three days for Pyongyang to break its silence on the blast.
