EMERGENCY, PLEASE HELP!
I'm experiencing some weird trouble with my computer. I keep running out of space on C:, yet I know I'm not putting anything new on it, I've cleared out all my temp directories and Norton AntiVirus doesn't seem to detect anything suspicious... Has anything like this ever happened to any of you, can you please help? I've been trying to figure this out for 40 minutes now and I ain't getting nowhere!

I have NO PROGRAMS WHATSOEVER open, I rebooted several times and my Win386.swp still stays at close to 500 Mb. The only program I have open is this browser window. I don't know, would it be safe to delete Win386.swp running in DOS-mode?!?

Do you use outlook or outlook express for your email client? Sounds like you might have a worm or a trojan, or even a self-replicating vb script in your email. Let me know.

Yes might be a worm but if you keep your norton antivirus updated it should have detected it.
I guess. |

Midnight
I can't run ICQ or anything, it'll just crash my system since I don't have enough swap space. As I said, I just downloaded the Norton Virus Update and it found jack shit... Can I delete the win386.swp in DOS mode and will it do any good/harm? ------------------ Respect, DamageX |

1st don't delete swap file! If you want to be with us instead formatting. I'm almost sure with Win98 you'll have problem doing such thing. I don't remember where exactly is located on system properties the virtual memory. Most probably you'll now, go there and set both minimum and maximum values to 220mb. Restart and give us feedback.
one day i forgot a program i had written in cobol running and i found my hard disk full with a HUGE text file ;-) do also a search for *.* and sort the files by size, check for any strange huge file in order to be sure [This message has been edited by Soul_Rebel (edited 07-12-2001).] |

IMO it's not a virus. For some reason Winblows thinks it needs to boost the win386.swp. Do NOT delete it, it's useless, next time you boot up, it'll recreate it (I am not usre if you can delete it at all). My suggestion:
Go to your system properties (right click on desktop/properties - it's in the performance options - I'm in Win2k, so I can't tell ya the exact link) and limit the Virtual Mem to 200 min and 200 max (in case you have 128 MB RAM) and reboot. That should fix the problem with the huge swap file. In addition, delete the IE cache and other useless shit you have on your hdd - all those programs usually feel like moving a lot of crap files into the Win98 folder (DLLs and shit), that's why it gets big and nasty and your computer's slow like a turtle after months of using it. Even uninstalling doesn't really help cause many parts remain in the registry and messs it up. Fianl suggestion: format c: |

I would not delete the swap file, depending upon the version of windows you are using it will just re-write itself anyway.
If you do have a self-replicating trojan, the only way you will get rid of it is to do a low level format on your system if your norton virus program does not pick it up. I am reticent to post my home phone on the board, but our business line is (508)376-2926 if you want to call. I might be able to walk you through a few tests that will get you back on track. One thing you can try..is to open a file in notepad, and write one line of text, like...Go fuck yourself..and save it...then see how big it is..open it again...dont write anything..then close it again....if the size doubles..you have a worm. Let me know. ------------------ Midnight Midnight Ventures Partner Program Excellence is not an act, but a habit - Aristotle |

might be helpful for a few of those mbr virus-bitches ! Boot off the Win98 installation CD and go to the command prompt and type that in. |

Ok guys and gals, thanks a lot for your help, I got it under control now. Why the fuck didn't I think of changing the virtual memory? I guess I just panicked... Anyway, about that format c:, I've been considering it for a while now, only re-building the system would take me like a month or so. I'll probably install Win2K on it instead. Besides, my system needs an upgrade so bad it can taste it! Just waiting for my first round of checks to come in so I can buy a larged HDD, some extra memory, a new monitor, CD-writer... Well, you get the picture.
Anyway, thanks a million guys and gals, you just saved my day/computer. Ahem... One more thing though... I can't seem to be able to run ICQ anymore, does anyone know which files to save in order to keep my contact list, before uninstalling and re-installing it?------------------ Respect, DamageX |

Easiest way:
backup the entire ICQ folder thru copying it somewhere else. Uninstall, remove the "c:\Program files\ICQ\" folder by hand, reinstall it and copy your old folder on top of the new one. Voila. |

Large Hard Drives partitioned off to virtual drives and have one about 2 gigs, and use it ONLY for virtual memory for Gates folly OS.
Also on some systems, which you don't find out until too late btw, just do NOT like hard drives larger than about 2.4 gigs. Its most likey a hardware combination that does that, so break them down. It defrags faster too and is lightning fast defragging with Norton Speed Disk. And Equinox... ummm you think 98 was bad?! lmfao You should have seen 95 and 3.1~~~~~~ |
