IVAN - Holy Shit!

Cat 5 Hurricane. The latest forecast track is straight through Florida. The State of Florida just issued a mandatory complete evacuation of the Florida keys by Friday.

Who's sticking around for this one?

not looking good. hopefully the high pressure in the Atlantic weakens and it takes a wider turn towards the east and misses Florida all together.

The worst thing about this track is that it puts all south florida in the North East sector of the storm which has the most powerful violent winds and heaviest rains.

We haven't even recovered from Frances yet. 600,000 people still have no phone service, 90% of the traffic signals aren't working and won't be fixed for at least 3 more weeks, 700,000 people still have no power, 20% of the cell phone towers aren't working, over 300,000 have no cable TV.

I am in Central Fl and will be staying for this one as well. I am hoping it takes a turn towards the gulf and misses FL. I live about 15 miles northeast of where Charlie and Frances crossed paths.
Good luck to everyone and be safe.

Add that with no power sofar for a total of about a week for both storms and it's starting to really tick me off.

I just talked with a friend in Orlando..

He says the state just cant take it...
if IVAN tracks as they have it going now.. it will kick the shit
outta Florida.

My friend is a long time resident of Florida... (20yrs) and he
said he had never seen anything like Frances.
He states.. the ground it just saturated.. puddles and mushy
ground everywhere... IVAN will blow down trees galore because root structure will not be able to hold onto wet soil...

I heard on radio that evacuation will start at 600pm tonight!??!!

Where does/can everyone go?

I'm about 1.5 hours north of Atlanta and OUR hotels were full over Labor Day weekend. Granted, some were tourists up here for vacation, but they usually rent cabins. The vast majority were from FL escaping Frances

Amazingly, they did have to come this far. Trees uprooted, schools closed and power is STILL out for thousands as far north as Atlanta from Frances.

Someone pointed out that this one isn't as big as Frances and will PROBABLY do the sort of damage Charley did - more intense but in a smaller area. Not good for those in that area but hopefully damage won't affect as many people as Frances.

more intense in a smaller area ... more like Andrew .. one more bad thing to add to this storm is that the worst part is the north east side of it .. so if it tracks up the state on the west or middle .. we'll get the worst the storm can dish out .. it'll devistate the whole state

my stomach is in knots. we are in for an even worse go around than what Frances did to us (i am speaking for fort lauderdale here). this one is going to rip right thru the upper keys and head straight for where we are at. again, i still don't have electic from the last one (been a week) .. but losing my electic is the last of my concerns.
it's damn near impossible to attempt to drive north, as the complete grid lock is bad, but the complete non-gas situation is even worse. so we could get as far as a tank of gas will get us, and then try to find a place that actually has some for sale ..
my 2 oldest brothers want to fly me up to Canada pronto, but then what leave my parents?
i was born and raised in fort lauderdale, so these hurricane seasons have naturally just become a normalcy of my life. this year has changed all of that.
i am beginning to think God has too much confidence in us Floridians.

Wanna see something scary .. this was in the 6:35am update from NOAA ..
Quote:
DROPSONDE WIND REPORTS ALSO INDICATED WINDS OF NEAR 210 MPH AT AN ALTITUDE OF ABOUT 350 FEET ABOVE THE OCEAN SURFACE.
.. basically .. if you were on the 35th floor of a building around the eye of this storm at 6:30am today .. you would experience winds of 210 MPH!!

Latest from the NOAA

A
FLIGHT-LEVEL WIND OF 154 KT IN THE NORTHEAST QUADRANT. THEY ALSO
REPORTED A LOWER CENTRAL PRESSURE OF 920 MB...SUGGESTING THAT IVAN
MAY CONTAIN SURFACE WINDS A LITTLE STRONGER THAN THE 160 MPH
INDICATED IN THE 5 AM AST ADVISORY. DROPSONDE WIND REPORTS ALSO
INDICATED WINDS OF NEAR 210 MPH AT AN ALTITUDE OF ABOUT 350 FEET
ABOVE THE OCEAN SURFACE.

And this track puts Miami in the north-east quadrant. 35 story high-rise buildings are going to get 200 MPH winds!

Frances was a pain in the ass, but this one is making me queasy....I may just get in my car and drive to DC or NY.

I was watching channel 8 in Tampa this morning. They had a clip from the hurricane hunter plane that flies into the eye of the storm. They dropped some tube down into it, and it recorded gusts of up to 210 mph.

Now, our house is new, and built to the new hurricane standards of 2001... but 210 mph? I don't think it'll stand up to that.

We've fared well through the last two, but this one looks really bad. Here's hoping for the best!

I feel bad for the FL peeps and it will surely suck when this thing hits hard.

The upside to this is I'm moving to Ft. Lauderdale in about 3 months so maybe property values won't keep going up so fast.

Lex Luther bought up land in Nevada and tried to make California slide into the sea so he will end up with beachfront property. Maybe Tennesee et al are up to something.

Yo, I told you guys days ago this storm was gonna be a Godzilla.

A very famous man I know told me on the phone last week that Hurricane Ivan was the weirdest hurricane on record. It started in the south Atlantic farther south than any storm on record and he said then that it would stomp Grenada flat. Everything he predicted this storm would do has happened to a 'T'. He lived through Hurricane Frances but his ass is headed out of Florida NOW.

If that fucking storm hits Jamaica at a Category 5 only God can help the Jamaicans.

It's predicted to head straight up through Florida but although the forecasters are saying once it passes Cuba it will strengthen, we're hoping it will do something to diminish itself.

It's a scary, fucked up scenario no matter what.

If you're in S. Florida just fucking split. 200mph winds are tornado winds. There are also gusts higher than that PLUS it's gonna spawn tornados too.

Just fucking leave. Don't take a chance.

Once you see what it's gonna do to Jamaica I'm sure you'll be on the first thing moving to get out of it's way.

Just think, we have 3 months more of Hurricane season to go...
