I don't know what you mean by state of the art..

I don't consider mine state of the art but for under $700 I have one with the following:

P4 2.8gz
768 RAM
CD/RW/DVD
Windows Xp Pro

Thats just for the tower of course. It doesnt cost that much when you add all the extra stuff yourself

I don't like small towers that look like a game cube.I have a big tower from chieftech with noise blocking, highly recomment it.If you need lots of storage space for hardisks or any kind of drives and want a good air circulation you should get one.

It really depends what your looking for..

If you want "state of the art"

You can spend $2000 and buy one thats liquid cooled and has four memory slots, etc..

I just never have had the need for all of that.

Well...at a minimum...I am interested in the fastest processor...the greatest amount of RAM...the greatest amount of hard drive space with the best speed available...the fastest CD writer and the fastest DVD writer...and the best Graphic Card.

That's the point, only gamers or people who want the best because they got the money but won't actually use it in any way buy those systems.

If you're doing usual business stuff, design with photoshop, using dreamweaver etc.

A 1.5-2Ghz 512-1GB 3200 DDR RAM a decend motherboard and a HD depending on how much data you got to save and thats it.Everything else bought on specific needs.

These systems are nice in the living room to use as a game system on the television, play mp3's and DVD/DivX. I wouldn't recommand them as a workstation.
If you like the small size, check the ASUS barebones.

That is all one really needs for a personal PC.. unless of course you want to encode movies, crunch TLD zone files, listen to music, while playing a game

lol, if you want state of the art in the wintel world avoid alienware... have an integrator build you a quad Opteron 250 system around a Tyan motherboard, 8 ram slots and 12.6GHz of aggregate bandwidth... alienware doesn't offer anything thats really on the bleeding edge..

Well that is really greek to me...but what would be the price compared to the price of the Alienware at $5,876. If it is more...I think the Alienware has more than enough features for my foreseeable use.

theking,

Im pretty good with hardware,
When you decide on a retailer, hit me up on ICQ (17630227) and we can tweak your components online, k?

I suggest alienware if you don't like to assemble the components on your own. If you know how, you can get the separate components from newegg.com.

Cheers,
B

chieftec's are very poorly made with cheap materials. If you are going to do it, do it right. get an Antec

Poorly made? Most solid and heavy tower I've ever seen.Their tower looks very similiar to the Antec.
