Paypal is going to FINE you $500 for using your account for adult content or services

BUYING or selling!

PayPal, the online payments arm of eBay, on Friday said it will soon fine people up to $500 for uses related to gambling, adult content or services, and buying or selling prescription drugs from noncertified sellers.

Guess if you sell your sig or pay someone to do any work dealing with a site they deem adult they can term your account if they can connect either address to their adult blacklist?

How will they ever find out? If both parties are discrete, they won't be able to PROVE anything. Besides, they can't collect the fine unless you have $500 in your account. Unless they can debit your bank account without your permission. They can't do that, can they?

If they cancel your paypal account, will they also cancel your Paypal CC? I just got mine last week.

You are a designer, your client gets pissed off at you for some reason, he emails paypal, you better say goodbye to your account.

a complaint can be from a non paypal email, giving the URL to his adult design service website.

That would piss me off, big time. But if that designer didn't have a link to his paypal account on his website, nothing could be proven. There is no law againbst an adult webmaster or designer using paypal for non-adult related stuff.

I've heard rumors that paypal was deleting accounts even when they couldn't PROVE anything. that is what worries me. I like to use Paypal for ebay (non-adult, of course).

You think paypal cares about proof of anything? Nothing can be PROVEN with paypal, its not possible. A hacker could have done it, etc, etc, etc

I was using my Paypal account for services that were not adult related in any way (mainstream graphic design) and they said it was adult content and shut down my account. The only thing I can figure out is that a competitor said this just to have my account closed and they don't bother to check. I then tried to contact them but they don't answer and if you call them on the phone they just direct you to an email address that doesn't answer. Fuck those fuckers.
The account was new and it was only used twice for mainstream design. The website it linked to was mainstream. The emails associated with the account were also all mainstream.

I'm not sure I want to verify my Paypal account. I held off forever opening one because of all the bad reports until there was an e-bay auction I couldn't resist... I've already received over $1000 and sent about that through it. I think when my limits are reached I may insist that others deal with services that aren't so cozy with my bank account

Paypal is losing thousands of customers to epassporte. Maybe one of these days they'll lighten up. If not, who cares, its their loss.

They cancel accounts just for sending or receiving money from someone using an adult domain name as their paypal address. They don't give a shit about proof and don't even give you a chance to respond or even state what evidence they have you broke the TOS.

I hope they do start fining people and they get a few big lawsuits as a result. I'm still waiting for the fuckers to free up the funds in my account after they closed it.

500$ fines are ridiculous, they can cancel an account without a prove, if they believe you broke the TOS. They can do or not do business with anyone as they like, but I doubt the credit card companies would be happy about seeing loads of fines being charged back. I doubt paypal will even try to collect fines, it would be suicide.

I doubt they would (or could) cancel a CC, since the issuing bank is independent of paypal.

Unfortunately, a lot of designers and programmers ONLY take paypal, which makes it hard to dump them completely. I hope more of them sugn up with alternative processors in light of these stupid fines.

Paypal seems to be OBSESSED with getting rid of all adult related business. A lot of companies SAY they refuse to deal with ADULT in order to make themselves look good. For example, yahoo made a big deal about getting rid of adult groups, but they didn't completely dump them (they just made them unsearchable). They KNOW that dumping adult altogether would cut into their bottom line. Paypal's obsession leads me to believe they are TRUE anti-porn advocates.

Someone should start an adult-friendly version of paypal.

An ad buyer of mine is in China and lost his paypal account. He pays me through Solar billing. Boy do they suck. They take out a huge commission for themselves, keep the entire payment for 30 days, AND hold 10% in reserve.
