Crossover cable and patch cable telling the difference
is there any way to tell if an network cable is a crossover or patch?

Well ... it's most likely not a crossover unless you bought it specifically for that purpose.
But if you need a crossover, you can cut open a regular cat5 and make some mods. -P |

typically, the ends will be different colors on a crossover cable.
