Although I'm not a gun owner since it's illegal in my country and almost impossible to take a license, I have used many tools in the army. I dont know why, but I found stupid to collect weapons (new ones) and most probably the easy access to guns is one of the major reasons for increased criminality in some countries.

Susan and Sovjetz.
Do you not know about "stereo-typing"? Suppose people were to call you child rapists b/c you deal with porn. Well you know better cause you "work" within the industry. The accuser doesn't have any idea what is involved with webmastering adult content. All they have is a first impression idea about it, they chant the same old view-line they have to everyone. So why would you make "generalizations" about gun owners? I own various fire arms and have entered many shooting competitions. I have practiced the art of shooting since I was a small boy. People within that circle are comprised of many walks-of-life...doctors, lawyers, police, judges, cooks, garbage men, jail guards, etc. They all love the sport. Its challenging, dedicated, expensive, and requires one to enter a state of calmness that is quite remarkable to experience. Its only a man, a projectile, and a sport. This also applies to golf and baseball. A baseball bat or a golf club in the wrong hands is a lethal weapon. Although women are involved their numbers are small. The Bianci Cup is probably the most sought after trophy for hand gun shooters. World attended and quite an amazing spectacle to observe. JakeR. Why do you want a "hand gun"? This is important b/c it dictates what price range you will be looking in. Btw, home defence, protection, and "to have just in case I need it" are all bad reasons. yeah right, you can kill a guy at 100m with a gun but try it with a golf ball or bat - slim chance.
Guns are bad news. Here in the UK we banned all hand guns even for sport. The only people who should be allowed to own guns are drug dealers, they use them to kill each other. |

Susan.
No guns in U.K. Have you checked how many murders there are in U.K.? And have you checked what weapon was most popular for those killings in U.K.? You should research this, you will learn some amazing facts. You make it sound like banning guns stops murders. Be brave, go out there and look this stuff up. |

People who want
guns driving licenses the right to vote should all have to undergo IQ testing with a minimum limit of at least 100 Susan - problem we have is that the lawbreakers already have the guns - and the few nutters than run out and kill people will get their hands on a weapon anyway. Recently we have had sword attacks. I am already banned from carrying a knife with a blade over 3 inches (the reckoned distance between derma and heart) yet i can walk into Woolworths and buy a 10 inch butchers knife if i fancy chopping some general public up ![]() Britain starting banning the ownership of firearms just after the first World War. All the troops had returned home and were getting back to daily business and then the depression started. The British miners were having a dispute at the time and started blockading the mines. The police couldn't disperse them because they were mostly battle hardened ex-army. The government called the regular army in to disperse the miners. The regular army was made up of mainly young men with no battle experience. The government started banning firearms so they could arrest anyone involved at their leisure. (condensed version) The Americans have the right to bear arms incase their government tries to become a dictatorship - so the people have the ability to rise up against a corrupt government. A pretty useless right it is in this era as goverments have too many external controlling factors (big business). Blah blah blah - i could go on all night - luckily it's food time for me |

i don't understand all this stereo-typing bullshit.
yes let me go out and get my knuckles tattoo'd. susan you're an idiot. If you don't like guns don't respond to the thread. sovjet, are you sure they're for weak people? Wilber- i'm not looking for home protection, or anything like that, we just moved to this neighborhood out here near chicago land and half our neighbors belong to some ritzy gun range where most of them go 3-4 times a week to shoot off some rounds, when i talk to these guys, it sounds like a lot of fun so i want to join , im not looking to get anything big or expensive (yet). just need a "starter" to get the feel for guns, maybe aroud 500$ ? What do you suggest? [This message has been edited by JakeR (edited 06-17-2001).] |

I just went paintballing yesterday. I love that sport. I'm just sorry I didn't buy the best paintball gun right off the bat. I decided to learn the sport, not depend on the gun. Bullshit! Try testing these 3 guns out at the range nextime you are there.. I promise you will like at least one of the three.
1) Glock :Try the Glock 19,17 and 23 2) HK USP 2) SIG P239 The sig 239 is a 9mm, and the glock 19 17 23 can be in 9mm 40 s&w or 45 cal. HK USP is nice also and also comes in 9 mm 40 S&W and 45.. Also if you are an exxotic the sig and the HK come in 357 if you wanna pay more.. These are the top 3 9mm you ccan buy and I promise you will fall in love with em.. Best thing to do is TRY each on at a gun club or range that lets you RENT handguns.. Shoot them all, then make your decision.. If not you are only going by looks alone, and your hand may or may not be a perfect fit for the gun you choose.. Only way to tell is to rent one out. JakeR. Go to the gun club in your area and see if they have used fire
arms for sale. 8 times out of 10 there is a Browning 9mm for sale. You should get one for around $200.00 to $300.00. The Glock's are popular but I find they "jump" too much because like the gen3 Smith and Wesson semi-autos the barrel is too high off of the fist. The Glock or the Browning's barrrels can be changed to a Bar-Sto barrel improving accuracy 40% or more. When selecting ammo try and get full metal jacket (make sure your shooting range allows this type of ammo). Accuracy is better w/fmj. Whatever you get start w/ 9mm or 22 cal. The 9 kicks more but either will not cost you much money. Trade up (most ppl keep their guns always) to 40 cal or for competitions I like 38 special+p 125 grains. |

A good price range for a nice glock i would say is 500-1000$...depending on what type. I prefer my Quantico FBI Edition gold etched Berreta though.

Jake there are alot of fine handguns out there in many brands and prices. Call the ranges around your area. Most rent them and then you can test them for your self. I was married to a guy that had to have the best names in guns and watched him get taken apart with weapons half the price range he/we had. Those cheaper guns had been and are still firing jacked up loads and are holding up fine.
A name isn't what you need to worry about. First thing is a decision on an auto or wheelgun. Then test different ones out. Go with the one that feels right for YOU. Not some lame name offering. I hate glocks since they feel awkward from the design and can't shoot one well at all. But I can shoot other 9mm's or 40's without a problem and I hit what I aim at now. (Yeah I ran off with the guy that could shoot better) lol Not that was the deciding factor.A gun is a tool. Just go to the lumberyard and pick up the different drills. You'll get the idea. One will just fit your hand better. ![]() |

I'd go with a 9mm for starters. That way if you feel the need to move up in power you can, but 9mm is all you'll ever need really for stopping power. At least against a human. If you want to take out an engine block of a car or something, go for a magnum. I'd steer clear of beretta's, they always jam no matter how clean you keep it. Most people will tell you to get a Glock because they are easy to maintain and can fire underwater. I myself dont like them as they have been known to backfire a little too often for my comfort. I'd say best choice for you would be HK USP in the 9 milley flavor. It'll be the most accurate and safest handgun you've ever shot.

300-600 bucks.
Depending on what state you live in.. I got my new Glock for 350.00 HK's, Glocks and Sigs run in the same range also. 9mm's, 40's, and 45's all fall into this range of price. They are all great handguns and are nice and light compared to the bluky and clunky Smith and Wessons, Brownings, and rugers and lugers. |

When it coems down to it, the HK, SIG, and Glock are all about the same.. They are all top notch quality handguns, and it would be hard to prove which is the better of the three.. It comes down to personal preference between these three, and the look ya like.. Also size and/or concealability varries.
But stick with one of the three, and dont stray to some clunky gun.. These are the nicest of nice, and you wont regret your purchase unlike a purchase with a heavyer clunkyer Ruger or S&W or a Browning. |

Berreta is a finely crafted italian masterpeice! Glock's will jam under heavy target practice (400+ rounds) Trust me! For a pro. target shooter, or competition minded person, a Berreta is the way to go (for my dime anyways)

Bone,
The sig 239 is an amazing weapon! Interchangeable barrels 9mm, .357, and .40! Like having 3 guns in one. The smoothest gun ever to fire. The Glock 9 is a big cannon! LOL, I'm not really worried about "target practice." In the real day to day combat, the Glock is the toughest (and safest) gun out there -- which is why many militaries and police issue their people Glocks. Did you know that you can drop the thing off a 10 story building, bury it in sand, and PUT IT IN A VAT OF PAINT -- it will still fire! It's tough, and can get knocked around. It also has a special safety mechanish that only releases the firing pin if the trigger is pulled. It will never missfire on accident due to a drop. It might jam up after 400 rounds (never happened to me), but why you aren't cleaning it after 200 rounds is anybody's guess... Hey pr0, the eighties called, they want their gun back....heheh ![]() --Brock |

A slot or slots cut into the end of the barrel to allow the backlash of the weapon to be lowered and more controllable. Report just in is it also lowers the muzzle speed as well. My 9 is ported

I just have a ruger 9mm, a llama 380 and some sort of 22 auto. Beratta I think it is. Oh and a Ruger 38. But I'm just a woman.
The hubby has the big stuff including pistols that shoot large caliber rifle shells. lolPorting is ok for what you would use it for since the muzzle velocity to target or burglar shoot isn't all that important. It used to cost extra and was after market. They hubby is saying some may sell them that way now. He doesn't dabble in them to buy anymore. It would help your accuracy he thinks. But if you shoot it in the dark be ready for the huge flash coming out of the port. I guess it will scare you if you aren't expecting it. ![]() Most of this info is via him. I can load and shoot, and know that running out and throwing 600 down on a gun is silly when its your first. Its not like they take them back if you don't like it. Autos are also harder to clean if you are going to do it right btw. Maybe not so much harder (Once you learn how to take it apart AND get it back together)but more time consuming. |

The best thing to do is go to a indoor gun range like Gemini said, and see what YOU are the most accurate with..
What feels good in your hand... My personal opinion Hands down for accuracy is a colt 1911 PERIOD... The 1911 frame on a springfield armory or whoever company makes the 1911 frame will be the most accurate in most cases for the average user... The colt has a much easier site system to learn.... I cant believe any of you guys skipped the most famous hand gun in the world... See what all the pros are shooting.. There all tricked out 1911's... I'm a huge fan of H&K but colt is more accurate to me.. Pro i love you man but i agree with bone beretta >>>>>????? cmon man its the year 2000.. LOL Actually beretta makes nice peices but i only like Italian cars... The gun that everyone wants is a kimber classic...... I have 22 assault rifles I have 6 handguns now I have been collecting for years... The colt 1911 rips on any of these newer guns.. It depends what your are good at.. I cant shoot a glock worth a shit... Get yourself a 200 dollar Ruger 22.. You will learn alot with that.... SNOW ![]() |
