A local Hospital here bills a woman $500 for fainting at sight of son's dead body.

What a bunch of COCK SUKERS at that hospital

(08/25/04) HOLTSVILLE ? A woman identifying her dead son was billed by Stony Brook University Hospital for fainting at the facility.

Roseanne Draghi lost her 20-year-old son as the result of a drunk driving accident. After becoming overwhelmed at the sight of her son?s corpse at the hospital, she received a $500 bill from Stony Brook hospital for treatment received during the incident. Draghi says the hospital has ?no humanity or compassion? for the circumstances surrounding the toughest day of her life.

You get what you pay for. I dont want free medical care.

And when have you ever had a cop there when you needed one? I wish I could pay them for better service. I can say however that the Las Vegas Fire Department is a kick ass operation.

Well, they could have loaded her on an ambulance for a few seconds, jut enough to bill her for " transportation"....

Easy to say when you can afford it.

I guess poor people don't deserve to be treated for life threatening injuries. Even ones who did have a decent job until it was outsourced to India and they lost their benefits and then just happened to get into a freak car accident where a piece of the windsheild went through their lungs and they just happened to be between jobs and not have benefits.

Let them all die. If you don't pay for medical care you don't deserve life.

Oh good grief. This is another one of those "where would you draw the line" things. The owner / director of the hospital wasn't sitting there. Hospitals have something called procedure and they did their job. Your probably auto billed when you name hits the computer, which it must if you are treated there for any reason.

I don't know a single person than can't afford insurance / doctor visits that doesn't go to the doctor or hospital when they are sick. My siter in law has had 2 heart surgeries the most recent just over a year ago. She's broke.

What does it cost in the US to be covered for medical shit?

Here in Holland its about 50/60 bucks a month and if youre above a certain income level (like me ) you pay about 110 bucks for a standard cover.

About the thread itself...its a hospital and they charge you just like any other business. They cannot get personal and emotional. Period. It sucks but thats the way it is and i understand it. If this wouldve happened to me i would be pissed but i also would understand it.

Yeah but as someone else just said, that shouldn't be the case.

Hospitals should not be businesses. The privitization of health care is a very scary scenario. Because the patient no longer comes first.. the bottom line comes first.

I'm a business man, any webmaster here is. And I understand bottom line and profit well. Which is why it scares me to think of hospitals run in such a way, and by such people.

Hospitals should be run by government and paid for by tax dollars. I hate paying taxes as much as anyone else.. but saving lives is one thing I don't mind my tax dollars going towards.

HOLY SHIT,,,are you kidding me???

My wife pays $450 per month for our family through her job.

If I wanted to get it under my business it would be 4x that.

Hospitals like any other business have to pay salaries for doctors, nurses, janitors etc as well as supplies, electricity, hazardous waste removal and on and on and on.... just like any other business.

Yeah it sucks that she got a bill but that's life. No where in the article does it say anything about weather or not she has insurance so who knows if she will even have to pay the $500.

Also since there is no link to the article one can only guess what kind of treatment she received.

Maybe she fell and gashed her head open and required stitches or maybe they fanned her face until she woke up and gave her a glass of water.

depends on a lot of factors. I checked in in my area to over me an my son with the smallest decdcutable( $500 ) would run me $400 a month( and I still have to pay 20% from $500-$5000 ) and we're in good health and I don't smoke. If I upped the decuctable to $5000 it's drops to about $250 a month( pays 100% after deductable is met ).

This has nothing to do with quality of care. She was treated released and charged for services rendered.

I see nothing that states she was not treated or treated poorly.

Of course that's cheap, but I thought medical care was free there?

I'm a business man, any webmaster here is. And I understand bottom line and profit well. Which is why it scares me to think of hospitals run in such a way, and by such people.

Hospitals should be run by government and paid for by tax dollars. I hate paying taxes as much as anyone else.. but saving lives is one thing I don't mind my tax dollars going towards.
yeah, and who do you think is going to spend the time and energy to make medical advances? not someone that is getting paid gov't wages, that is for sure

Seems she doesn't because most hospitals just charge you co-pay.

America has failed miserably at managing public healthcare.

They should take a lead from countries like Denmark, Australia and Canada where the system works much better.

I actually need to see a doctor, but I dont have insurance so I'm holding back.. My family says "just go to the emergency room", but I dont want to abuse the system.

About the thread subject, I think it's sad that someone actually took the time to write up paperwork and such and bill the woman. Hopefully they didnt understand the situation and it was really an error, but I tend to doubt it.

no they don't, and there are not enough details to make any determination as to what her coverage was or if she had any
