On a side note, I do remember a story about a timer worker in Washington State, I believe, whose was working late after the rest of the guys had left. Unfortunately, his bulldozer rolled over on him, pinning his leg and causing a compound fracture that was bleeding.

Realizing that he couldn't wait to morning without bleeding to death, he reached for the only tool within reach: his chain saw. I think you can guess the rest, except that he managed to drive his stick shift pickup to the hospital.

Some guys have a phenomenal amount of guts, that's all I can say. I'd probably die before I could cut my leg off.

Another story about a logger (who knows if these are true or "rural legends"?) is about the guy who fell on his chain saw and severed his neck 2/3 of the way through to the spine. By holding his head exacly in place, he kept the bleeding to a minimum and kept blood flowing to his brain.

I don't remember how he got to the hospital, but it might have been by operating the steering wheel and gearshift with one foot while operating the pedals with his other.

Or perhaps someone drove him. I don't recall.
