You can get traditional (regular metal), clear, esthetic, gold, or lingual (tongue side). The lingual brackets go on the tongue side of your teeth so no metal wire or bracket is visible. When the clear, esthetic, traditional, and gold brackets are cemented to the facial (front surface), of the tooth, you will still see the wire that connects the brackets. Whichever one is chosen, they will not match your teeth exactly. They try to blend them with your natural tooth structure so they are not as noticeable at first glance.

Traditional are the cheapest, but they are still going to cost about $2,500 + , just for the braces. That doesn't include any prep work you may need to have done before the braces. (Cavities filled, restorations replaced, any orthodontic appliance, thorough teeth cleaning, dentist visits to your regular dentist before the orthodontist can do the work...) .

Each type has it's pro's and con's. Not everyone can wear all the types of braces available, either.

I haven't seen silver braces in a long time. My brother has blue I think and my step-brother has purple.

I wore the damn things for four years, then a retainer for two. ARGH!

And I didn't get the little steel brackets that are the standard braces. I got the whole steel wraparound kind, the bands are steel, the bracket is steel, and they are cemented on all sides of the teeth.

That was NOT fun.

the brackets themselves are either clear (ceramic) or metal. it's the tiny elastics ('ties')that attach the wire to the brackets that can be coloured.

I always had the clear ones. They would discolour from coffee or anything with an artifiicial chicken base. Rice a roni would turn them neon yellow, but the brackets themselves remained clear.

Simply go in to have the discoloured ties changed frequently; it's a 30 second job.

Has anybody here tried those new Invisalign things yet? I've been contemplating getting them for my top teeth, but haven't heard any feedback from a real person who's actually had them.

it seems that your teeth need to only have very very minor flaws for invisalign to work

Invisalign is exactly the same thing as my orthodontist gave me to use as a retainer once my braces were removed. I cant see them being very effective for corrective purposes

Same here...And I snapped through them fast for some odd reason. They're not very sturdy.

I had braces but fortunately only had to wear them for a year and a half. I lost my retainer too.
If I ever had to get them again, I think I'd get the ones that go behind the teeth.

behind the teeth braces would be great. but you have to be careful. i could not get them at all because i have an overbite.... sooooo i have been stuck with these clear braces for almost a year. a little more than a year left. thrilled with the way my headaches have disappeared and my jaw no longer clicks. can't believe how much my teeth have moved. i am very glad i have done it.

I have traditional CLEAR braces. They haven't done much so far, which is disappointing considering I paid 5k for them.

You need to consult an Orthodontist for that.

Roughly, they are about the same time as regular braces, which is 6mths - 5 years.

Everyones mouth is unique. How well you follow instructions makes a big difference also. Your age, which arch, how far the teeth must move and which direction, and density of the bone all factors into the length of time needed to straighten the teeth.

My girlfriend's father is an orthodontist.. and there are tons of options.

The best would probably be the ones that go on the insides of the teeth instead of the outside.. but they are pretty expensive.
