Anyone here have TiVo? Which box do you have and how much do you pay monthly?

I don't have TiVo anymore. Just got the DVR from TimeWarner cable. Only costs me $6 a month for the box and the service.

TiVo was $9.99 a month plus the hardware.

Check with your cable company, they might offer something similar.

I heard that they are working on a big promotion with reduced prices on the boxes to get more people on the service?

I always say I have TIVO but I have the cable DVR box which is the same thing and much cheaper.

They need to bring them down to $99. Take a loss on the hardware and make up for it on the service. Like video game systems.

I got mine for $299 when they first came out. It they were $99 more people would consider it.

I don't know which one I have - bought it at Best Buy about a year ago.

It's the DirectTV TiVo and since I have the full package with Direct, I don't pay a monthly fee for the TiVo AND everything is downloaded through the satellite instead of through the phone. It's LD for me to call any of their numbers.

I was just checking it out now. It looks like the 40 hour boxes start at $99 now.

I'd get TiVo, but I don't use a phone line at my house, since I hardly ever use one. So I can't use it until they start selling the ones with Ethernet on them.

lol.... trust me on this one. You'll always use up however many hours you have on it. Mine is always full. Especially now with all this olympics programming on different channels.

They are, just saw them on sale for $99 this past weekend. I prefer ReplayTv so I've got a few of those. Its basically the same as Tivo, but with a few more options. Both Tivo and ReplayTV are drastically lowering the prices on their units and in turn raising the monthly access fee to around $12-14/month.

I have two tivo machines in my house, 2 directv dishes. One tivo is in my bedroom, one downstairs in the family room. We got them for $99 a pop, and they record about 35 hours or so on each one.

We record the family stuff downstairs (The Simpsons, America's Funniest Home Videos, etc), and the heavy stuff upstairs (Six Feet Under, Sopranos, etc).

We pay a flat fee for Tivo each month to Directv, only $4.99 - that covers all the tivo players. It is much more economical than their Ultimate TV package they had a while back that was $12.99 per month.

You do if you decide to start watching every episode of the Simpsons like we did...or my wife got on a Magnum PI kick for a couple of months before she burned thru all of those episodes...

I have DVR from Charter Communications, I pay an extra $10 per month for about 50 hours worth of space on my box. Its has been so worth it. No extra fees or charges, just $10 per month.

I think each of our receivers holds about 35 hours at a time, you are not limited to the amount of recordings you make per month.

They are going to come out with a new box that will allow you to email your recordings up to 9 or 10 people, so you can start sharing your recordings with family, friends, and so on.

The hours actually do go pretty quick. The 40 hours or 140 hours is actually the hours if you recorded at the lowest quality.

I record everything in the highest quality so I probably only get 40 hours or so of recordings.

Cool, so to clear that up, with a 40 hr recorder, I can record 40 hrs worth of stuff, delete those shows and re-record other shows, again and again, even during a one month period?

I record everything at max quality also.

Any word on when the DVRs will come out for HDTV?

I picked up a couple ReplayTv (same thing pretty much) units from ebay with lifetime registration, older commercial advance unit, brand new in box - we've gotten a LOT of use out of these things and like them quite a bit.

I've had 1 for a few years now. Its a series 1 tivo, when it dies i'll get a new one. My feelings on the matter boil down to "friends don't let friends watch live TV".

Watching a movie, get an important call? Pause.
Need to take a leak? Pause.
Can't STAND Old Navy commercials? Fast Forward.
GF/Wife suddenly wants to see every West Wing ever shown? Set up a 'season pass', and get them all on Bravo.
Dad in town, addicted to stargate SG-1, but you have things to do in the evening? Season Pass, do your thing. When he wakes up in the morning, he can watch them.

I wouldn't go back....Oh, I also picked a an ElGato EyeTV. Its a little box that takes coax on one side, and USB on the other. Plug into your mac, and it uses local disk to record...very cool.....

I have the DirectTV Tivo that records two programs at once. I think its like 5 bucks a month and it's way better than the old standalone Tivo that slowed down the remote control to a crawl.

It's the only reason I watch TV.

It's my understanding that you only need a phone line for the initial guided setup.

Then you can use a usb wired or wireless ethernet adapter.

I've got two old tivos in the garage. Bought them when they first came out. Now I use the Time/warner cable DVR which is much better. Don't have to have the remote cords and lots of times TIVO would go off after a power outage, and I wouldn't notice it wasn't recording untill it missed my favorite show. Also, the Cable one will record extra time if the TV guide changes but TIVO's would often cut-off the end of a program if it once ran late. Plus the whole modem/phone line thing is crap. Go with the Cable DVR - You won't be sorry.
