What's the point to buying expired domain names?

Now that Google has its own way of stripping a domain of its backlinks and the PR, what's the point of buying expired domain names with no traffic?

Also, does Google strip the DMOZ backlinks off the domain when it expires?

I've never bought an expired domain for the existing PR... I bought because a good/cool name became available.

Yeah, if sex.com ever expires, don't bother registering it because google has stripped all the backlinks.
I post on GFY so that when people ask me what I do,
I can tell them that I work with the mentally retarded.

same here, a domain's traffic would have to be amazing for me to buy it just for that
