how many people have dial-up?

How many people still have 56k dial-up accounts?

When building sites, do you still keep the pages small, for those 56k surfers?

The bandwidth usage & prices are hardly a problem anymore

I've had broadband for 5 years now. Even when I travel, I try to only stay in hotels that have high-speed net access (which explains my sig).

All my stuff is built for broadband surfers.

I just read an article that 51% of US internet users now have broadband. On the flip side there are some people disputing this. Either way, don't go overboard on your main pages, at least. You don't want someone to leave before you page even loads.

I've read that South Korea has a crazy % of households with broadband. Like 75% of homes in S. Korea have broadband (or something like that)

45k, wow that's really small. I thought with <100kb I'd be good but I may have to rethink that. Prolly need to look for a better jpeg resampling to cut the pics down even more

I am sure 90% or so of webmasters have DSL or cable but I am concerned about surfers, specifically US surfers. If 50% dial-up users is true then I really need to cut down my pages a bit more

I have had cable internet since 1998... with the exception of 3 weeks when I moved and had to wait for reconnection.

I don't specifically build pages with dial; up uses in mind, but try to keep the load time as fast as possible for the surfurs anyways

I always design with dial-up in mind. Try to keep all my tour pages below 70k. It's even better when I get them down below 50k.

aDSL here..

damn, I get chills when I remember the dialup days. We had to pay $100 for dialup access and that was only for 6-7 hours per day, not 24/7. 24/7 was like $350...

even the adsl I'm on now isn't very fast, 384 down / 128 kbits up (40kb down, 10kb up) but still its much better than dialup, at least you're 24/7 online. Took me 8 years enduring dialup hell!

It varies from city to city. Plus studies conflict. I'm sure most webmasters are on broadband and appear to design to it.

One thing for sure is that more people get broadband every day.

Oh, the 56K!! Dream on. Many dialups are actually slower than that. If you're too far away to get DSL, then the line is not gonna support 56Kbps. So figure 28Kbps. For these poor souls, the Internet is a different experience and many don't even understand what the speed brings.

The last report I read, and I'm sorry I can't remember where I read it, the dial up consumers are right around 45-51%. That was as recent as last month.

This is still lot of dialup in the world... I didn't think that... But when I build movie sites, dialup users aren't important for me...
