    Costa Rican Webmasters (New Info)

ADSL is now available from Racsa.

    3MBPS/1MBPS is $300 per month.

Available in most areas, including Tamarindo and surrounding beaches.

I'm posting here because I can't remember all the people who have ICQ'd me asking about bandwidth in Costa Rica.

$300 a month for broadband in Costa Rica?
I post on GFY so that when people ask me what I do,
I can tell them that I work with the mentally retarded.

Recently the only real choices were:

          1) Slow 256/128 two way sattelite available ONLY to established businesses. $600 per month.

          2) Various Cable options from Cable Tica and Amnet. Speeds ranging from 256 one way to 1mbit/500 two way. Costs ranging from $90 up to $1000

          3) Dial up. Unlimmited price from internet company, but with a "per minute" exedente charge on the phone line.

The introduction of ADSL marks a signifigantly more flexible, and cheaper option.

A 1M/500k option is available for around $100 (I think)

I'd assume it is. It's available in Flamingo beach, and Flamingo is much smaller.

You need to be within 3KM of their central point in the city. Not sure if Jaco has one, or where it is. Give Racsa a call (I know this is a giant pain) .. They should be able to help you.

Incidentally, this marks the first true broadband available on the beach.

I had to return to Vancouver to run my online business 1.5 years ago. I got sick of living in San Jose (Okay Escazu). Now that it appears you can get broadband and live on the beach... I'll be returning to Costa this winter.

Thanks for the update. When I return I'll be at Los Suenos, which is probably a tad more than 3km from "downtown".

I'll drop you a note before I head back down. It would be nice to have a couple of acquaintances down there.

We usually stay right near Manuel Antonio park in a hotel called La Masion. Beautiful place owned by a famous Dutch guy.

The beach party is Friday/Saturday nights right on the beach in Manuel Antonio. There's a little self serve type place on the far right of the beach (If you're facing the ocean). It's a typical no walls open aired place. After 10PM they pull the tables in, bring out a sound system and the place turns in to a disco. Because it's right on the beach, the party naturally spills out on to the beach. Incredibly fun experience.

Mar y Sambra is in Quepos it's self, right? I recognize the name but can't place it.

I'll be living in the Tamarindo area though, myself. I just like the atmosphere and the party in Quepos.

I must have been there during the off season, as I don't recall any party on the beach, sounds nice though.

If I recall correctly, Mar y Sambra is right on the beach just outside of Manuel Antonio as you're heading back up the hill towards the hotels (Si Como No).

By the way, how do I get in touch with you?

You don't get a year round warm tropical climate.
You don't get some of the nicest beaches in the world.
You don't get the layed back Latino lifestyle.
                                  You do get cheaper internet
You do get better overall infrastructure.

                                  It's a trade off.

We own a small network in Costa Rica, so if anyone wants boxes there
                                    we have them.

Were tied to 10 megabits down there, small but good for sites that need to be down there for legal purposes like gambling and stuff....

Sounds decent.. and bound to go down once people start getting it.

I am actually wanting to move down there myself in a few years... at least part time.

Now is the time for Costa Rica

The realtively new President in Costa Rica has some new ideas for immigration and foreign ownership.

Taxes will be higher, immigration will have stricter standards, and it will all around be more difficult.

If the ADSL is what it's being billed at, and I will have first hand information soon, there's no reason to use the cable.

The ADSL is faster and will be available in many more locations, including beaches.

Cable is currently only available in San Jose and the immediate surrounding areas.

The realtively new President in Costa Rica has some new ideas for immigration and foreign ownership.

New President?? :-) He is due for another election sometime soon - Pacheo is unlikely to be re-elected (not that he is an asshole, but there is a better guy-in-waiting with previous presidential experience).

It is not Pacheo who is causing immigration restrictions - this is common sense stuff. Costa Rica is a country which has been very tolerant re immigration and, as ususal, this is being abused. It also seems to be the case that a high percentage of crime is committed by folks who are here illegally. They just want to clean the place up and kill this rise in crime - which is exactly high in comparison with "civilised countries" - just not normal for here.

Yea.. they need to introduce some taxes - it's a damned joke at the moment. In effect, there is little or no taxes. But any webmaster would not have a problem here with taxes even if they did introduce them (Tho they ain't gonna be much!! *s*). There are plenty legal ways to kill that.

With the Libera airport open again, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the country located within minutes of it ... Jaco will experience lower growth than the Guanacaste area.

Stand on Playa Conchal, you'll think Jaco is a mud hole after.

With the Libera airport open again, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the country located within minutes of it ... Jaco will experience lower growth than the Guanacaste area.

Stand on Playa Conchal, you'll think Jaco is a mud hole after.

Truth is there ain't really a lot of choice on homes/condos - tho they are being constructed by the batch there. Land/homes on the Guanacaste/Nicoya area are sold pretty quick and prices are rising... roughly, about 20%/year or more.

Generally the Pacific Coast is the place to be - tho unless planning is done carefully, - it will end up like Cacun.

I've invested a largish lump of money into the Pacific Coast area and between friends have secured miles of land - dunno the total, but loads - there is now no more land left for sale in that area. Other friends bought years ago and had some land for sale, but that's all been taken off the market cos they know it's worth more to just sit on it :-)

Sometime.. hell knows when, but in a year or so, I've have some very interesting shit for people like "webmasters" or any "mobile" person if they are thinking of living in Costa Rica.

Sounds a bit pricy, but I guess that's the price to pay living there.
Hell no!! Costa Rica is "expensive" by Latin American standards.

But when you think there are, in effect, no taxes - nobody bothers you, a full time maid or gardner costs around $300 - $300/month etc - this place is damned cheap and offers a lifestyle far in excess of the "civilized world".

On the other hand... in some other Latin American countries the cost of living is only about 25% that of Costa Rica. I can think of one friend who lives in a neighboring country, he has... think it's about 9 staff, maids, chaffeur, gardner etc and his wage bill for that is around $1000/month.

There is simpley no comparison with other industrialised countries - this place is a total paradise in comparison - and one that most visitors here rarely see.
