almost all my furniture (except my bed, dresser, desk and one couch) is from ikea. a whole shitload of knick knacks too (utensils, glasses, bar equipment, towels, tupperware, etc) and i've never had a problem with any of it.

Cheap laminate covered particle board is what makes IKEA's founder rich. 80% of what they sell is simply dressed up sawdust. Do you know moving companies won't even insure particle board furniture? It crushes into powder at the slightest impact. I avoid the stuff like a plague.

There are some true deals at IKEA but you have to look hard. I try to get the "real wood" stuff - even if it's cheap wood like pine or poplar. At least you know it should survive a move.

A lot of there stuff is so cheap... it's always breaking on me. Even kitchen stuff... I had a can opener that the handle broke off after like 5 cans. I bought it because it looked good and strong since it was all stainless steel. HA!

I bought a house full of IKEA shit 18 years ago when I bought my first house. I never had a problem with it, but I don't like the quality.

I have a bed from ikea and it has stayed intact regardless of the heavy load and excessive usage.

A lot of people I know just love their stuff. I have not bought any furniture from them though...I tend to shy away from the cheaper stuff as I worry about the quality of it. I would rather just save up and buy something of very good quality. I think it saves me money in the long run.

When I lived in LA, I used to love going there and checking out all the stuff- bought a few items and never had a problem. I wish we had one where I live, I would be there all the time!

Sorry about your furniture though!!

And I wasn't the only slave to my nesting instinct. The people I know who used to sit in the bathroom with pornography, now they sit in the bathroom with their IKEA furniture catalogue. ~Chapter 5
