I'm from Europe and they want 27 bucks just for shipping, that ever kinda scared me off from buying it (shipping DVDs though airmail to europe costs 5 bucks or less).

Yikes! You might send an email. I think it goes directly to the director. She's probably be happy to drop in in the mail a cheaper way.

Nice pics Rand. Looks awesome. I will be in Mexico (unfortunately).

SleazeQueen 08-20-2004 12:53 AM

My sister has been big time into Burning Man for years. She's one of those people that goes out there early to help set up and then stays for weeks after to clean up. She used to spend most of her time in the Temple of Atonement but I haven't talked to her about it in the last few years.

I'm never sure if I should open threads like this one because I'm always sure I'm going to see a new side of my sister. And I need to keep a straight face at Thanksgiving so we try to avoid each other's antics on the internet. :)

Wow! Damn good to hear that you're still around! I just found an email from you too. It'd be great to see you again so keep me posted on that event you're involved with at InterneXt in January! FOR SURE! Glad you're still doing your thing.

I know you'll be in San Francisco while BMan is happening but I could totally see you on the Playa. Next year maybe????

Whoa! The man burns in 9 days! Pickin' up the RV tomorrow. Making the trek to Black Rock City on Sunday.

Now that's scary

That was right before I legally married 2 friends of mine. (I'm ordained in the ULC.) I'm holding one of my Grandfathers's old bibles. He married over 1000 couples with it and gave it to me for my first ceremony. It was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life.

This year, my grandpa gave me another of his bibles to burn with the Man. It is old and worn from 15 years of Sunday sermons.

Having me burn it with the man is his way of facing his own death and embracing my version of faith.

I don't expect everyone here to get this. And a year ago I would never share something so sacred to me on GFY. But my 92 year old grandpa reminded me something this week at lunch, "I'd rather be ridiculed than ignored" he said.

I've read your website ... your view of life is very interesting :P

Doctor Dre 08-26-2004 11:31 PM

My parents are very religious and both work in a feild where their work has a lot to do with religion . Both pioneers in what they are doing ...

I don't really understand the meaning of burning the bible but I will certainly not laugh at you or nothing ...

Was just saying the pic was scary

lol. I agree...it is kinda scary.

Grandpa was a Baptist minister and told me that a proper way to dispose of a bible is via burning it. (He now consideres himself a "Baptist Budhist")

Since burning things is a part of the Burning Man tradition (representing the notion that everything is transitory) he wanted to overlap the two paths. He has always been a fan of what Gandhi said as "All Religions are True."

Grandpa was a bit of a pioneer, too. This is him on the left with MLK

I'd love to hear about your folks' work. ([email protected] if you want it private)

Rand 08-27-2004 12:01 PM

Hal is one very interesting guy.

I just watched a DVD called "Gifting It" which is about the Burning Man bartering system. Hal was interviewed and appears in this documentary project. Very cool.

Alright folks. I'm off the grid. Really.

No email. No cell phone, No television, No newspapers. No real contact with the outside world until I get back from Black Rock City.

It's a nice respite and a helluva time on the Playa. Those who think they "get it" or would "like to* should consider going next year, It's NOT for everyone. But creative souls find it to be an amazing experience.

The man burns in 8 days.

Off now.

kahloz 08-27-2004 01:24 PM

Wow, i just a couple of burning man videos and tons of pictures, looks trippy.

i'm gonna have to grab a friend or two and go next time around :thumbsup

Halcyon 08-28-2004 10:53 PM

I leave in the morning.
My car is packed.
Bobo is coming at 9am to load his stuff and put the fur-covered bikes on the bike rack.
I?m thinking ?Good Weather? thoughts.
Forecast has lows in the 50?s and highs in the 90?s.
20% chance of rain mid-week. But that means diddly.

I feel good about my costumes. I?m less ?big and furry? this year. Still lots of pink and fur, but also showing lots of skin. Even my evening wear is tight fitting.

I?m looking forward to wearing my white chaps. They were a gift from my brother years ago, and I?ve never worn them on the playa. This year I added pink stars down each leg and now they feel right.

I?m charging my camera battery.
I?ve transferred music and comedy to my ipod. Got a car adapter for the ipod, so I can charge it on the ride.

I?m making a list of food to buy in Reno. Mostly canned stuff and sandwich makings.

I?ve got grandpa?s bible packed in a ziplock bag.

I?ve got two big tents. An air mattress. Rebar for tent stakes. Some fabric for decorating. A full length mirror for costume prep. Shells and stickers for gifts. Extra sunglasses. Three large things of sunblock.

I touched up my hair dye (above and below) yesterday.

I have a hotel reservation in Reno for tomorrow night.

I think I?m ready.

I?ll see you after labor day.
Love,
Halcyon
