Bruce lee would knock his ass out. Jet Li is more of a look then full frontal action.

jade_dragon 08-17-2004 04:07 PM

Bruce would never use nunchuku in a real fight, he actually hated the weapon, said it was flashy and wasted to much time and energy, was not direct enough. But he knew the flash would be loved be the crowd and so it made it into the movie.

You should tell some wushu artists that they are not the real deal, i think they would change your mind quickly. Much like Capoeria the art is full of trickery, speed and deception not brute force (angolan capoeria not regional which is capoeria and shotokan mixed) Put a Wu shu steel Broad sword, a tai chi sword or a whip chain in the hands of one of these guys and you will be mesmorized with how many angles they can effectively hit you from all at one time.

Anatomy and kinetics have not changed that much in the last 30 years, no advantage there

Bruce grew up as an unskilled street fighter then under Yip Man learned Wing Chun for his protection since he was a bit of a hot head in his early age and also small. Jet on the other hand as posted before did it first as something to do and then just fell in love with the martial way. He has less "real world" fight experience but does have some. He like Jackie are advocates of fighting only when you really really have to including taking hits to remove yourself from the situation, something that Bruce would have thought a travisty.

speed and power must me mixed to have the best possible chance of delivering a blow. Jun Fan Jeet Kun Do was split into a few key elements two of the most important ones had to do with speed differances in fighters. Jun Fan was about about both intercepting a strike and lauching a counter almost spontaneously thus giving no time for recovery once an opponent had dedicated themselves to a strike. This covered the defense but the art was not about sitting and letting someone strike at you like hapkido, large parts were about opening up holes and that depending on knowing if you were faster or slower than the other person so even if Jet was faster the art was set up for such scenarios.

You are correct bruce devoted much of his life to the art of fighting, doing little more than working both his mind and body to become perfect, trying to make a living and having his family with linda. He is what a true master should be modeled after. No insult to instructors, sefu, maestro or sensai out there but when I see 8 year olds walking around with black belts and 45 year old guys with 9-5's calling themselves masters, grand masters and Dans I just have to think how much lower the standards are here in the U.S.

This fight would not have been as spectacular looking as you think. Fights between real martial artists usually do not last long and there is not much flashyness to them, there are minimal throwing of strikes because those strikes have to count, this is not point sparring, you are trying to hurt the other person. Bruce had whittled down his striked to only 4-5 at the end, with the finger pokes being one of his favorites. This fight would last no longer than 3 minuits i would bet and probably would not go that long.

The one inch punch is not a strike that does much damage, it is mostly to stun an opponent and upset his timing and balance, it actually has very little to do with power also. The rib cage is bone and cartilidge set up in a, well, cage. By compressing the front end of the cage quickly and solidifying your stance the rib cage will act as a spring and the body will be catapulted off of your fist, it stuns you and stings a little but it is in no way a knock out strike, you could pummel a person by running in after the strike is delevired as the person tries to recover balance. His lunging side kick uses the same principals but had enough force to crack ribs and cause internal damage or joint seperation, this would knock you more than a few feet, the punch would push you about 2, the rest of the distance is from trying to get your feet back under yourself and/or rolling

There are a lot of myths out there and talk, if you really wanna know a lot about the man and the legends try to get media that is JKDN (Jeet Jun Do Nucleas) approved. This is an organization that tracks all registered Sefu who have direct liniage to the LA, Oakland and San Francisco Schools as well as media that has been checked for accuracy by his wife or Danny Inasato one of his closest friends.

as a matter of fact yes jet li has been a champion of full contact sports but

School: (1971) Beijing Sports and Exercise
Awards:
(1974) Youth National Athletic Competition: Gold
(1975) 3rd National Games: Gold
(1977) National Martial Arts Competition: Gold
(1978) National Martial Arts Competition: Gold
(1979) 4th National Games: Gold
(1974 - 79) Internaional Guest Performer for Beijing Martial Arts team.

but he can not say he invented a style like bruce lee did. and i am pretty sure he is not as fast as bruce was. two different styles may have been nice to see a match.

Actually no non chinese (Gui Lo or outsider) was allowed to train in any form of Gung Fu or Kung exercises. On the contrary blacks had already set up many prominant schools in California including the BKF or Black Karate Federation schools.

(BTW even though the name black was in the title the school was open to all races of man to train in, it was just historically started by blacks who had returned from Japan where they had learned Shotokan and wanted to teach discipline and self defense to all people able to make it to the dojo including whites and mexicans who have prominant rolls as organizers and champions as well as titles within their ranks to this day.)

Jim Kelly which was the black guy in Enter the Dragon was a graduate and grand master who had grown up and trained in the Oakland school which was the very dojo that was shown in the movie.

Bruce admits Kareem would be a hard man for him to beat because of the effective striking distance Kareem had and all the attention and training Bruce had given him and height differance involved was astrounding. That was actually his foot print on Bruce's chest in the movie! Interestingly enough Bruce said he did not think he could beat Ali in a fight.

Not a fight at all, Bruce was also an avid ground fighter also but would never have allowed the signiture leg shot of the Gracies. Bruce had develpoed a step kick from cat stance that was difficult to penetrate. Cat stance unlike horse has a 20/80 weight distribution that allows weight to be shifted between the rear and front leg quickly, you truly never know how much weight is on an opponents front or back leg in this stance and Bruce had a shifting derivitive of the stance because he believed that a stance was stagnant and allowed for holes to be exploited. Unlike the fighters who the Gracies have beaten in the octagon Bruce did not at all believe in a fixed stance and threw away any type of Horse or POWER stance as his first improvement of his art, even so much that he eliminated the 1 inch and 3 inch punch from his real world strikes because they relied on it for the spring effect minutely. Ss you see all fighters who fell to Gracian Ju Jitsu use a derivitive of horse stance because they are fighting using mostly upper body strength except for the Kick boxers but their cat stance is to rigid and allows for the leg shot, also very few of them were true ground fighters/shoot wrestlers in the beginning which Bruce was.

The step kick is simple and so effective it is taught in most military classes across the world (very minimal and most effective areas of hand to hand are taught here). With Bruce's speed and shifting cat stance I do not believe the Gracies would have known when it was and was not safe to shoot for the legs for the take down and you know they were not trying to go toe to toe with anyone especially someone like Bruce, I have seen the step kick used against the leg shot effectively time and time again by people much slower than Bruce. Remember this system of fighting was pioneered by a man who studies all other forms of fighting, removed what he thought was ineffective then took away more and more just to have the most complete and seemless way of fighting. If your form has any history that could have been learned and exploited it would have been.

You talking about the fight that was in "Dragon", the one where he fought the guy and he kicked him when he turned around which put him in the hospital?

Well that fight never took places says his family and friends, that black guy in the movie never existed either haha, Bruce had two close friends at that point in his life, a Japanese guy who I can not remember the name of (very odd for japanese and chinese to be friends back then especially if they are martial artists) and later on he met Danny Inosato. The chinese council was not happy about outsiders being taught and requested he stop and was shunned by the community of Grant Street and the surrounding areas in San Fran but there was no death match where he was injured. If you read about his life you will find out that Bruce failed to warm up properly and caused all that damage while weight lifting at his apartment but of course that did not seem as cool as him being attacked like he was in the movie. Likewise after the exhibition at the tournement he did not fight anyone after the 60 second match as I have come across. If you read in the beginning of Dragon you will see they say that the movie was dramatized for entertainment purpose, from that movie they had a lot of "documentaries" which used it as a referance but most of that info was fictitious.

Yeah I know the fight in front of the council was fake. He fought him on a private beach. His wife was there watching.

BTW what do you think of the Vibrating Palm?

humn, i heard about one beach front fight but it was not connected to the council, I will see what I can find on that.

I prefer the 5 finger, 5 palm exploding heart technique myself! :Graucho

No really I have a few Kung books and would love to start training in some of the Chi focus exercises when I have more time, Dragon Claw Kung where you pick up increasingly heavy items places in a small mouthed jar and every morning at sunrise motion like you are pulling up the sun as well as iron palm and iron bell have interested me since I started studying Chinese martial art. I used to do a lot of "parting the water" which got me big into isometrics and that is also one of my favorites of the more "realistic" kung exercises.

BTW gundam kicks ass, I think i will go watch endless waltz right now.

Enema 08-17-2004 08:02 PM

I have no idea how you guys think Bruce would beat Jet.

Jet Li is officially one of the greatest martial arts masters in China's history, a title he earned by winning five national Wu-Shu titles during his teenage years.

When he was 8 he was removed from regular school and placed in a special wu-shu training school, 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, nothing but wu-shu!

Before becoming an actor he travelled worldwide representing China in all sorts of tournaments... he even did a display for Nixon on the whitehouse lawn!

jade_dragon 08-17-2004 09:04 PM

While Jet is a great martial artist I have met many better including Master Pak who has his own place in China's history for training police and Military in Tiger/Iron Palm/Eagle Claw. He is acredited with taking down multiple cells of Triad along with local law enforcement, the man gave his right hand to the martial arts. It is now a fused knuckled battering ram and he keeps it covered in a glove when in public as not to alarm people because of the look of it.

Bruce likewise gave his body to the future of martial arts. Not taking anything away from him but a bunch of exhibitionary wins does a true warrior make. There was a reason Jet idolized Bruce, they both lived martial arts but one was a street fighter/warrior the other was a showman...... I will ask some people if he has reached mastership level in the ranks of the WMA, you do realize there are ranks called Grand MAsters though right?

Wow, Morihei Ueshiba was on that list! When I studied Aikido, we began by bowing to a picture of O'Sensai. If you've ever seen videos of him in action, he's simply amazing. There's something about watching a 75 year old man defeat a dozen other men.

I used to have video of one of his 1" punch demonstrations. It's freaky! The reciever was a white guy about 6', 230 lbs and a master martial artist himself, so you can be sure the guy could take a hit. Bruce sent him a few feet, where the guy ended up on his back. Simply amazing!

I understand this, did you notice my comment about my original lack of sarcasm tags? All of Jet's movies seem to involve the extensive use of cables in fighting scenes for a sort of anime effect. It was a joke, not to be taken too seriously. Just laugh and enjoy it.
