i think it all depends on drive size
i usually buy in bulk with hds and ive had wd 40's that all went to hell and wd 80's that are still running strong with all the abuse. same problem with maxtor and seagate

WD suck , ask anyone who builds computers for a living.

Maxtors & Seagates are highly preferred among pros

If I asked anyone who builds computers for a living and bought quality components and not the cheapest thing they could find they would tell me "Maxtors are fucking junk".

Why would they say that? Because they are fucking junk. In the 13 years I have had hard drives in computers, the only HDs I have ever had die on me are maxtors. The same can be said for a number of people I know.

Just because someone builds computers for a living doesn't mean they have a clue about what they are doing.

As for the best brand, generally the better the warranty (Including a no bullshit RMA policy) the better the drive.

Of course things like luck and the quality of your power come in the play as well. Which is why you should always back up your shit.

I think Seagate is one of the better brands out there... they've always been dependable for me.

I'm partial to maxtor, but then again, all of the ones mentioned so far are decent, it just depends on where you get them, defects, etc... in the end, a hard drive is a hard drive no matter where you buy it from, go based on warranty, price, and your own past experiance

The IBM that Dell stocked blew out in under 2 years, so I pulled out the Western Digital 6.4 GB harddrive that I bought in '98 and had stored in a junk box for the last 3 years, and it worked like a champ.

I have had many problems with Maxtor drives... several dead drives... perhaps 3 have just went out on me in the past 4 years. I do not buy Maxtor anymore... Western Digital has been strongly recommended to my by numerous web hosts and other people.
