Anybody here into horses??? How can you...
tell a good horse from a bad horse.
I know cars, homes and motorcycles. But how the hell do you check if a horse is Salvaged or not???

Just like a car if you are going to get one have a mechanic you trust look at it... Just get some referals to some local vets and see if one will go check out the horse with you...

You should always have a vet check out a horse, but your "test drive" is also something you should insist on.
There is really no other way to find out if the horse has the temperament you want and how responsive the horse is. Even whether it's a comfortable ride for you... |

You will want to have a vet check the horse and give you a certification of health.
You should research the breed that you want to buy first and perhaps join a few yahoo groups about that type of horse. I would suggest buying a few books like these http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...books&n=507846 Ebay is a great place to get horse books online. Have a friend that has horse experience help you out. What part of the country are you going to buy in ?

If you have a kid that wants a horse, you might want to set them up with lessons first. Sometimes horse trainer/stable owners will find you the proper horse for a small finders fee.

She's only a year and a few months so you would have to hire a trainer to break her when she is older. I have bought a couple of great horses off that dream site. ![]()

new horse owner group
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HORSES_101/ Just watch out for the horse people , alot of them are just as bad if not worse than the porn biz. ![]() Alot of them think they know alot about horses just because they have money when actually they lack common sense. Research is the best thing you can do along with vet checks and common sense. Check the stabling prices. I have heard they are high in the Los Angeles area. ![]()

Before you even think about paying a vet to go look at a horse consider a few things.
1.) Where will you keep it. I had 500 acres, and it was great for my horses. If you live in the city, you will have to stall the horse. 2.) If you have to stall the horse, do you mind paying that? 3.) how often will you see it, ride it, groom it your self? 4.) do you know how to do these things. 5.) average horse weigs 1000lbs. If you are scared of them, they will know. 6.) do you realize the cost that is invoilved in keeping them. Feed, vitamins, vet visits, hay, and grain to mention a few. 7.) Most horses live 20+ years. Are you ready for that?? What will you do when it passes away?? I am not trying to sound mean or anything, but if you do not consider these little items, then you are doing a great deal of damage to a very smart animal. Imagine keeping a dog in a closet for a week at a time, and only taKing him out a few hours a week... Horses are not always loving. Usualy the males are more loving. We had a Throughbred that would eat 700lbs of hay in about 36 to 45 days. Plus 12 cups of grain a day, and grazing on the grass. They eat 16hours a day, and drink not less then 10 gallons of water a day. Just a few things to think about.
