Whats the best RAM memory out there ?

I see DDR2 is quite expensive.

Is there anything better ?

(planning to build a new PC)

you wont notice the difference..

just get the speed your MB will support.

"More RAM" is better than "faster ram"

512 DDR is enough for me. Unless you're gonna use it to render/edit movies or play games I don't think you'll need more.

The best ram? The 1G Corsair DDR 400 or 466MHZ (depending on the motherboard). But I don't think you would notice a huge difference even if you used standard RAM.

Corsairs are nice... they have built on heatsinks... instead of just the bare sticks. i have a pair in my home PC..

with RAM .. the general guideline is:

1) Low latency is better
2) speed depends on your MotherBoard

you'll most likely have to buy 2 identical sticks since most newer MBs are dual channel... (2 x 512 = 1GB)

Memory speed and latency is key in extreme situations.. like if you were to Overclock your PC or something... otherwise just get a lot of what your MotherBoard can support =)

if interested in overclocking, it is important and it does make a difference.

even if you're not overclocking, some mobos do better with particular brands of ram.

then you get into the whole EEC / non-EEC thing. one is not always better than the other, it depends on what you're using the machine for. (and what your mobo supports)

it's kindof like dual-proccessors, but for memory. (i don't know if that's an accurate technical example but it's a decent analogy) it allows your memory to multi-task. most good modern motherboards will have 4 slots, and you will want at least 2 sticks, that usually should be placed in slot 1&3 or 2&4 to take advantage of the dual-channel mode.

I got a PIV 3.2 and the Asus P4C800 Deluxe motherboard. Can't wait to get my memory sticks so I can build it.
