Edgar Martinez retiring from baseball today

One of the best "unknown" hitters of all time, Edgar Martinez, is calling it quits
    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1855838

This man was a Picasso with the bat, hitting for power and average, I hope to see him in Cooperstown one day. As a baseball fan, I appreciate that he stuck with one team his whole career and I loved watching him play when I had the opportunity.

I hope he'll stick around baseball and catch on as a batting coach somewhere. He could be a great teacher to a lot of youngsters.

It's pretty shitty how the Mariners kicked him out by not letting him DH even though they're out of it...

          Hmmm..

He should join teamate John Olerud and join the Yankees for his retirment.

Olerud was also let go from the mairners a few weeks ago.
Now he's doing well with the Yankees.

          They actually appreciate em there.

            Sykk,

That's a bummer man. I mean I have been watching Edgar for years and years.

I think he still has a shot in the hall of fame, best damm DH ever!!

It will be sad to watch my mariners without him. But I agree, he loves baseball to death and will be a hitting coach soon enough

              wait..

              He wasnt let go??

He only announced his retirement at the end of the season..

Are you guys saying he's done as of today, or done as of the end of the season??

Its no secret that this would be his last year.

"pending the end of the year"

Ahh thats ok. Im sure they'll give em the proper sendoff.

I read this thread wrong as if they let em go.

I was thinking what the fuck??

                  Bone,

                  yeh end of the season.

I wish he would stay with the mariners, hitting coach in trip A or something.

Even know were doing shitty this year, we have one of the best minor league systems out there.

Very good player or should I say DH? Too bad the M's are having a terrible year this year.

when the article I linked to first went up, they said it was immediate, but I guess that changed after his press conference.
