Technical question

How does one go about networking a laptop to a desktop? I have files I want on the laptop.

You can use a crossover cable and plug the network cards directly into one another.

A what??

I have a router, if that's the box that I plug my computer into along with the husband's computer to get DSL to both computers. I have no fucking clue what a packet switch is, though.

yeah that's a router. you could always just plug your lappy into that, share your harddrive with the network, and browse it through my computer.

OR attach it to the network, then just get on aim and send yourself things through direct connect. that's how i transfereed all my shit over.

Do the same with your notebook. Enable DHCP on your router and you can network between al three computers. Don't forget to share some folder.

Yeah, just hook your laptop to the router and run the windows networking icon from your laptop. Follow the wizard and it'll connect. Then you can drag n drop
Just do it, dont think about it or it can sound overcomplicated when it really isn't ;)

You might not need to do any DHCP stuff. Worry about it if something doesnt work. IMO

I think my dhcp table came default to allow the maxiumum possible number of users, lol. I limited it down to just my 3 since it's wireless too.

You can buy xover cables at the store fairly cheap instead of making one. ( they are usually Orange in color)

The only thing to rember is that you have to set up an IP address for both computer manualy 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2

Interesting link.. I wonder why they have to have 4 extra wires in the cable that aren't even used? Sounds like a waste...

Depends on the speed and weither the cable is full/half duplex. In other words, can the cable recieve and transmit at the same time.
