Yahoo has a story about how China has blocked indecent websites including Google.

My guess is that they would do it from the ISP's of the country. They could do the blocking.

My understanding is that all traffic into china comes through one location in HongKong (one of the reasons they have a hard time getting high speed access). The goverment has a "bad list" which blocks anything on it into the country.

I had a chinese developer who was wanted by the chinese authorities for putting up un-authorized news. They even employed hackers to try to shut him down when i let him host on my servers. He had people throughout china hosting the site on dial-up evrytime they blocked his IP.

one guy was arrested and tortured by the secret police over there.

but for all I know he was high on opium and full of shit, right?

            Simple.
You block a range of assigned domains.

            Interesting ...

in hong kong i have no trouble getting any sites, but in china its hard to get usa news websites like yahoo ect due to politics ect.

regarding porn, its completely illegal there anyway, but legal in hong kong as its a one country 2 systems policy.

the day it changes i will be on the next plane back to uk

They use a firewall on the main internet backbone connections and they just block whatever websites they deem inappropriate there. You just won't be able to connect if the firewall won't allow it.
