I got a dilemma (please read, important subject)

I am currently going to Canadian College studying pure and applied physics (which concentrates on the 3 main science courses, math chemistry and physics)

it is probably the hardest program in college and the one that "opens more doors" for you, mostly in the science field

the thing is, I want a degree for sure, one to show around, one to rely on when everything else is to fail

but I also want to get a degree in something that will actually HELP me during my time as a webmaster

I was thinking about advertising or marketing or some shit like that

but the thing is, if I am to take something like that, I am lacking the "commerce" courses in college, business, economics and such...

I could finish off my semester and head out to university learning computer scienece or some bullshit

or I can decide to switch programs now in college, spend a few extra semesters but get the courses necessary in taking marketing in University

so to make a long story short, WHAT can I study that will improve my career as a webmaster?

are the teachings big enough for me to say, fuck everyhting Ive done so far in college, im going to restart?

or should I stick with my science field and go into programming or sometihng?

or am I just making a huge fuss for nothing?

if only I knew the system better...

just looking for some thoughs, questions and comments here...

thanx in advance guys, long live GFY

Stick with your science, long as you have an interest in it.

Commerce / marketing courses are a waste of time, everyone can get one of those degrees these days

Unless you take internet marketing courses, I'd say it's useless. It's all basic common sense anyhow.

agreed, you really don't need to take marketing courses. you just need to play the field and see what works. When something doesn't work stop doing it and do something else, and when something does work you find a way to do it better

study what you enjoy most, it's not a big fun to study something you don't like. for the webmaster business, i think common sense is much more important.

Ah, another victim of Quebec school's system. CEGEP is useless, buddy. It doesn't even count as a college degree in the US. It's like doing two years of community college. My advice: get out now and stop wasting your time.

Choose Maths combined with Programming or Computer Science.

I did.

Sergei Brin (Google) did.

Coincedence, but we all 3 look alike, hehe.

Stick with the science and just take a course outside school to have certification and that will do you best in the long term.

depends on how close you are to the degree. Just a year stick it out. If you don't use the science knowledge though when you are done, it becomes almost useless. You start forgetting things and science moves forward.

you don't need a course to learn internet business stuff. If you want to learn traditional marketing stuff you can just as easily read about it there's millions of books. I'd say you only need to do a university degree or papers in that stuff if you plan on being an employee.

I think we are missing some key info.

Is webmastering creating a nice living?
Plan on keep doing it?

If yes then just finsih in the quickest route.
If no then plan the next step based on teh needs of that career.

I go to a top business school in the US, top 10 actually. The one thing I've figured out being a finance major is what you learn is done by the way the class is taught, not necessarily the material. They put you in a ton of different situations that involve public speaking, group projects, etc. Almost every class, whether what it is be it marketing, finance, operations, etc will have group projects and presentations, 1 on 1 interactions with someone who has influence over your grade, etc. They don't teach you really how to conduct business, all that is learned on the job. Rather, they give you a business mindset, you learn how to deal with people through experience like group project after group project, you polish your communication skills by delivering presentation after presentation, and they teach you how to interact with "co-workers" in a sense and manage people. Thats what business school has been about in my tenure.

I never went to university
I was the best student in my highschool class
I make more money in a month, than my brother makes in 6 (he is an architect btw)
I sleep every day until 11 and take 5-day weekends to fuck my gf
Right now I'm on vacation until October

edit: I'm 25 so most likely I would still be in university

Depends on your college and how good it is at teaching business, in my college with all of the science and math courses I took 90% of the work I do on my own. You can always find out the course curriculum and just start studying it up on your own and see if there is something that you think you can gain from the class, then the decision is easier. Or even talk to the professors tell them how much experience you have what you are currently doing and what they would recommend studying.

Major in whatever you are majoring in, and minor in marketing, business administration, accounting, or another field that will help you in running a business. Or do a double major with one of those.

Yeah why not, maybe I will do that in the future, I am not against studies for sure it is important.
I always wanted to be a mathematician.
If you like what you do and work hard you will succeed.

yeah it's much better going to university because you want to as oppossed to so many people who just seem to go because their parents pressure them or they can't think of something better to do.

If you aren't able to run your own business after highschool you aren't a real business man.

In my opinion college is for those who can't learn by themselves and apply the knowledge but need to be forcefed with stuff they'll mostly never need. It's for those who don't have any talents and think others always have to tell them how to do their shit otherwise they won't make it.They need the security as an employee and are too pussy to start their own business with all the riscs involved.

If you enjoy math, chemistry and physics and can wrap your mind around it that's where the big bucks will be and you will always be in demand. Who knows where the internet will be in five years.

Marketing, business and whatever is avaible to study is just theoretic bullshit.Learn for yourself how to market your stuff right,no teacher is able to tell you anything useful in that area that you wouldn't have already have imagined.I never liked school after middle school, got out as fast as I could and I never said to myself that it was a bad decision.

I have to disagree with your point of view about school

even if school doesn't teach us exactly what we need to be successful, it constantly challenges our mind and teaches us to reason, communicate, question, and understand

I go to school because I love to learn new things, and I know that it makes me a better person at the end

besides, what is the porn industry completely crashed one day? then what will happen to you?
therefore a degree is also something to fall back on, in case everything we have going on fails, no matter how little the chances of that happening are...

besides, there is a life outside of the internet, and people with higher degrees of education seem to be very respected in that life

I'm a selfmade man, there's always business for me, I've already done lots of other things, but porn will never die out and I love it too much to give it up.

Even if I should ever fail I'll start something new,no problem for me, I don't need securities.

I don't really give a fuck what others think about me, neither do I need to feel respected by some elite college graduates who think they would've made it to anything when daddy wouldn't have paid for college. Also I don't get along with people who think somebody with a better education would deserve more respect. Selfmade men usually get the most respect anyway ,just look at that jerk donald trump, everybody sucks his cock.

I finally pinned down my college major after much soul searching and thought.

Double major: Psychology & Marketing. Put the two together and see where I'm going with this.

I would say stick in your program and get your degree. If you have room, take a few upper year business electives like strategy or something. A lot of the lower level courses are probably stuff you already know.
