Kid Webmasters (got one?)

Ok ive been playing around with the thought (for months) of lettin my boys set up there own sites. They have a couple ideas and and are really into it.. Im really eager to show them that some brains and hardwork can pay rewards. Like cash rewards..haha.

Anyways, my 11yr old and 8 yr old (boys) just officially setup their first blog. Its a basic duplicate of the site i made for them as there homepage. You know the regular kid stuff...links to all their favorite sites, some cool pics they found etc.

SO.. what im curious about is....

Anyone out there teaching there kids some business basics to groom them for mainstream success? My kids are fascinated by the fact that if they built a good site they could have thousands of other kids looking at it to, and to myself i see a HUGE market in selling shit on them..lol..books, video games, music, etc

So anyone do this..or thought of doing this..i would love to set up a little group for the little trumps to network, link trade, etc.

Kind of like a little exec club of the net i guess...haha And with the parents having a good grip on the business aspect we could really give them a hellofa shot in the right direction, wish i had it.

Right now i got it set up so only I know the ftp and blog logins.

They do all the work but under my guidance. I do most of the html/template add ins but i explain it well to them each time..how we do it and why we do it. But using a setup like a blog it makes it fool proof for the kids to work with. Just takes them awhile to pick it up.

Basically i see my 2 boys pick this shit up like it was the new Zelda game. Its amazing how sharp kids are..way easier then a noob adult!!

This is all about guidance and learning. A good ole fashioned apprenticeship, working with the old man/lady.

Sounds very cool. Like an ongoing project you and your kids can share.

My son can draw cars really well, and I've been telling him to make 12 really kick ass pieces that we can make a calendar out of it and sell it online. I've touched on the basics of html, but not too much since I don't know jack about xml, php and all that, and i didn't want to teach him things that would only confuse him later on.

My little brother made a small videogame that he would customize with other kids pictures. Sold a few of them as "Your kids very own video game" etc like those personalized books in the mall.

Yeah for sure, but i suspect within 6 months my oldest will want to load his own pages, images etc. Hes into it bigtime and he understands the that theres a big picture to the 17" picture he sees. Alot HERE dont have that concept.

So yes ongoing now, but something that they can do all through there teens (on there own), what a cool outlet to express yourself at 14-15! . An hour a day after homework could do wonders for the properly layed out and set up kid site. Im 100% sure someones kids from here could make 100K a year someday.

And i dont mean mom or dad i mean a kid, i think its probable.

What your saying is totally viable. Kids think in fresh and different ways, no telling what might come of something like that.

I've taught my oldest son (9) some basic html and he's built some basic "hello world" type pages but he's shown more of an interest in photoshop and graphics, so has been playing around with that. He doesn't quite "get" layers yet, but getting there and it's so true about how fast kids pick this stuff up.

arent you afraid that they'll be exposed to too much you-know-what-the-fuck-is-in-the-web??? at 8 and 11, can they be responsible for the consequences of their actions?

nah your missin the point. the point is to be active with them and also show them some skills. You keep there computer locked out of that shit. And when they do there hr a day so do you, with them, its not like they got handed the dirt bike at the shit festival

You cant shelter them cause of fears, but you can put emphasis on the good important aspects of the web (which we should be doing anyways)

Think of the big picture, not just what we see, theres a whole world of opportunities for the kids to cash in on now, it would be foolish to put it aside because we know whats out there with our experiences, we can sit back and just point the way (or atleast offer strong guidance.

one of my brothers kids build her own websites

she started off with one of those blogger.com sites and basically grew it from there she is only 13 but she is already making and additional $50 a month from this one site

the money has been earnt by her and she can pretty much spend it on whatever she wants

the last time i spoke with her about what she was going to do with the money she told me she wanted to save it up so she could buy a copy of photoshop and learn how to make banners and stuff

i guess by now she is only about $100 from owning a copy

i agree to its amazing how much kids learn if they are truly interested in something as a hobby and yes it can set them up to be something other than a road sweep when they are older we are living in the age of technology i remember when i was her age all i wanted to do was play soccer as far as i am concerned if she enjoys what she does and can learn about new things while making money.. well she is onto a winner

It's all in good humor, chill

But seriously, get them into something they like and they will flourish! All kids like videogames, ask them what their favorite game is and see if they want to start a page about it. Once they realize how much fun it is to run a page they will start getting more and more involved in it

See if any of their friends would be interested. Start a club. Have weekly update-days. It will be fun for them

Once they get a nice amount of page views they will become increasingly interested in updating the page, as you mentioned above. Slowly start teaching them about the business side of things, ways to keep their surfer's busy, and different methods of building traffic.

That's how I started 7 years ago.

now CHIIIIIIIILL!

That is so cool

I just started working with my son on his first site about a month ago. He is 12. We still have to finish making it, the page layouts are done. As soon as it is done, I think it would be great to do a link trade.

The blog, good idea I think I will add that for him.

Yes the blogs are great for them. And i think the mainstream blogs fend much better for themselves then the adult ones im accustomed to.

Bikes, video games, music, movies, books...the possibilities are endless for them

I'll be putting something together for mine and looking for a few other RESPONSIBLE parents to take part, remember of course this is only for the kids who WANT to learn...Forcing them wont help nothing.
