More than 70,000 people in Australia have declared that they are followers of the Jedi faith, the religion created by the Star Wars films.

A recent census found that one in 270 respondents - or 0.37% of the population - say they believe in "the force", an energy field that gives Jedi Knights like Luke Skywalker their power...

i was going to sign Jedi at the last census - but then when the census collectors came round my partner and I pretended we didnt live there coz we didnt want the government having all our info

It was done by loads of Star Wars fans in the last census in an attempt to get it recognised as an offical religion.

It didn't work.

A campaign to get people to write the entry on their census forms has succeeded in the term being included on the list of religions, alongside Church of England, Roman Catholic, Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu.

Sufficient numbers of people wrote the entry in for it to be allocated its own code for the census processing team to use.

a "significant" amount of people had written it down, they
refused to list it as a religion even though the law says they must.
