Font Problems...

Hi all!

Ok I never thought I would have to post such a newbie kind of question but I am stumped and can find nothing on the net.

I'm re-vamping all of my sites while I have this impromptu break. For some reason when I test them in IE, the font has gone HAYWIRE! It's got to be twice as big as the last time I checked them or anytime before. The text won't even fit in my tables anymore. Arrggghh.

First Question...why would this suddenly happen?

Second...Besides doing everything over by either reducing the text size (it looks shitty enough in netscape as is) and/or re-do using CSS which would probably give it more stability, but still a huge project...what can be done?

Even if the text size is at 3, it still looks like a 4 or larger. I drop it down to 2 and it looks like a bold 3 and is still too large, not to mention very small on netscape. If I drop it down to 1, it looks half way decent (go figure a 1 for text and not a footer?) but my netscape users would have to break out a magnifying glass to read anything.

I am so stumped as to why this happened all of a sudden. I have made no changes in my puters fonts, res or preferences in any way.
I have went over the code with a fine tooth comb for renegade font tags, etc. and can find nothing.

Sorry for the long post guys. I'm starting to panic that I may have to completely re-do my sites (if I even figure out the problem) and that is no easy task.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

April

Thanks Bone,

I would love to give it to you, but I explained in a post a while back that all of my sites are down and are going to stay down until we figure out whether we're going to have to move to the East Coast

Can't pack a house, move 3000 miles, find a house, unpack and so on and still be able to maintain my babies. That problem with my ISP wound up being a blessing in disquise Using the free time to re-vamp and upgrade...leave it to me to get stuck on a font problem LOL

Thanks anyhow BP

LOL Wizzo.

Just thought maybe someone has had this prob and/or has an idea on how to fix it. I went over my code very carefully, I don't think the prob is there...seems to be a new (or new for me) cross browser font incompatibility. Anyone else notice anything?

OK, well after reading as much as I could find on the net and in my books, I have come up with 2 possible answers. CSS, which may or may not give it more cross browser stability. Or, make pages for different browsers and use javascript to re-direct the surfer to their respective browser.

I was really hoping for something a little quicker and not so tedious LOL.

If anyone has a better way, I will be forever grateful

Hey April,

I built my boss's site using CSS and called from the base dir for every page in every dir.

This is a copy of the css that I use.
BODY {background: #000000}
A:link {color: ##99CCCC}
A:visited {color: #6699FF}
H1 {font-size: 10pt; font-family: arial, times, helvitica, serif; font-weight: 400; text-indent: 5px; text-align: justify}
H2 {font-size: 10pt; font-family: arial, times, helvitica, serif; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none}
H3 {font-size: 8pt; font-family: arial, times, helvitica, serif; font-weight: 100; text-decoration: none}
H2.title {font-size: 11pt; font-family: arial, times, helvitica, serif; font-weight: 400 text-decoration: none}

I wish you could see it in action in both IE, and Netscape but his server really did crash on me.

H2 is the base for most of the text, and I 'bold'ed the text which gives you a nice strong arial font which looked fine to me in both browsers.

I had to bold the text at each point in the html where I wanted it. I fucked with it for days trying to bold thru the css for both browsers but I just couldn't do it. So I just went this as a base, and would bold on each page.

Try it and let me know what you think.
It's been a few days since the server crashed, so I kinda forgot exactly how it looked.

Thank Lord...

Actually April I fucked up. That's an older CSS,
the newer one was the exact same but with this added to any style that you want bold.

font-weight: demi-light

Here is a test page to see the CSS it should look the same in both browsers.
