whats RAID exactly? is it an alternative to IDE?

LadyMischief 07-26-2004 07:21 AM

4 120 gigs in one machine, a 40 in another, and a bunch more 120s in another machine.

It are normal IDE drives but setup like this:
2 drives are striped, which means if you read/write a file, it's split up between the 2 drives, which makes it 2 times as fast (RAID 0).
These 2 drives are also mirrored (exact copies), so 2 drives have to fail before I loose any data (RAID 1).

pelcito 07-26-2004 07:30 AM

Two 200GB IDE each one.

Ice 07-26-2004 07:31 AM

Are you happy with the speed that your 15K rpm SCSI is opening programs ?

I've got a 120Gig 7200rpm HD with 8MB cache but I'm still not happy with the speed its opening my applications. When I asked about a 15Krpm SCSI I was told they can burn out very fast and are a bit of a hassle to setup. Whats your experience ? Would I notice a sizable difference in application speed if I had a 15K rpm SCSI drive for my applications ?

45 gigs.

Plenty for now.

Remember when 10 gigs sounded like a ton of drive space?

I remember when 1Gb was plenty of space when I was stuck with my 120Mb HD. I had to delete some windows95 system files because I was running out of space, apparently didnt erase any critical ones and the OS still ran. hehe

Daymare 07-26-2004 07:51 AM

36gb WD Raptor 10k rpm for the OS
120gb WD storage drive
200gb WD storage drive
= 356gb

I started out on a 386 with less than a gig of drivespace. It was a total dinosaur, but damn I learned a lot with it.

Ended up selling it to a technical school for fifty bucks. :1orglaugh

If you have a hard drive cooling unit, you should be fine. With any of the faster 10-15K RPM drives, it's best to have a cooling unit, it'll DEFINATELY add live to your hard drive. I bought a Vantec Vortex and it does a wonderful job -

The only downfall about that model is that you have to manually turn it on with your system, however, it's second nature to turn it on right after I hit the power button.
