free / paid hosting hybrid

Hi there -

I was wondering, with all of the free hosting problems that seem to be discussed on the board, if anyone has ever come up with a plan that is a hybrid of the 2 ?? Lightening, maybe you could look into this, a plan where you get all the nice things a paid host offers. i.e. cgi/php, domain name, stats, full ftp. And instead of taking up 1/3 of the top and the bottom, take up say the first 70 pixels with 1 banner and text on either side of it, and let the webmaster have the rest of the area for themselves, but then charge then a small per GB price, say 85 cents to help cover expenses. That way everyone wins. Just a thought. Any ideas ?? Thanks.

Harcorehosting, OK heres my opinion. First, don't think your the first to have this idea.. It's a good thought, I and many others have talked about something like this. There are several reasons why this won't work. First, it is already a very very low percentage of surfers that actually ckick on a Free Host header or footer. Now to cut that back even further would be even worse. The small surcharge you mention, would barely bring you back to where you were before giving up the extra real estate. Because in order to do this per gb, you now would have to do all different types of tracking, billing, and so fourth... This extra work would just eat up the bandwidth surcharge you would collect. Also now your basically getting into Paid hosting? Well its 2:15 am here and I can hardly stay awake, I hope this shed just a dim light on the topic..
Remember this is just my middle of the night opinion.

So wake up bright eyed and bushy tailed and get some servers (chat one too now lol) and host us that are dis-satisfied with the services we are getting by hosts that could give a darn!

Charge a fair rate and they will come!

well i think the reason most free host ad space doesnt get clicked on is becuase the large majority of it is poorly designed or extremely unorganized. If I had a free host, I would try to keep it as neet and clean as possible with only a few quality sponsors on it, not 235423535 text links saying "free passwords!" "hot sex!" just my 2 cents.

that's what I'm thinking Unriz3n. I think one nice looking banner, or attention grabbing set of text in the middle. And then maybe a LL, Adult SE or TGP site button, to help drive traffic to the sites. And a non adult paysite sponsor like a swingers site, or one of the penis enlargement type sites. And make sure the banner is in line with what is on the site. I saw one of the free hosts the other day that was listed on the Hun that had breast pics, but all the links were for mature type site. Now I'm sure that the webmaster type to offset the category like that so less traffic will be funneled off. So I'm not sure what the answer is Thanks for all the input.

one of the hosts i use hasn't validated their header/footer properly.(&)
One of them is trying to run an ActiveX, which fails (thank god).
If you have been reading the other threads, it turns out that a banner in the bottom right gets clicked more than any other - so i don't quite understand why you talk about getting rid of the footers....

Try to fit the hosting banners in more with the page content? What ARE you on HCH?! My gawd, that would be a job for 5 people full time with Lightnings number of accts.

If they didn't have that set of banners set to go server/network wide, they'd spend every waking hour on banners and hmm, its supposed to be a money MAKER not a cater to the user that is already GETTING free service.

We have servers, but not free hosts or adult and they take alot of work to keep online and such let alone trying to deal with the whims of a user that may change the site content-purpose 4 times a month (IE: mature, teen, trans, gay etc)

And since when don't mature women have tits?! Eh? missed the point there, We *have* em, where teens just wish usually.
