I am getting ready to buy a new camera here very soon and think it's pretty much narrowed down to a Canon either the 300d or 10d.

I am curious if anyone can give me an idea of the major differences that actually matter. Maybe if someone had bought the 300d and now wish they spent the extra money on the 10d. That would be very helpful. I don't know if the differences I can tell are worth the extra money but this is what I have found are:

The 10D has a metal body (magnesium alloy), the 300D is plastic
The 10D shoot at 3 fps for 9 frames, the 300D shoots at 2.5 fps for 4 frames
The 10D has ISO up to 3200, the 300D has ISO up to 1600
The 10D has a PC socket for flash, the 300D doesn't
The 10D has a rear control dial, the 300D doesn't
The 10D takes the same grip (BG-ED3) as the other Canon DLSRs, the 300D has it's own grip
The10D takes the RS-80N3 remote (same as EOS-3, 1v, 1D, 1Ds), the 300D uses the RS-60E3
The 10D has a pentaprism, the 300D has a pentamirror (usually not as bright)
The 10D has 17 custom functions, the 300D has no custom functions as far as I can tell from the specs.

I didn't really answer my own question I pointed out what I have read to be the differences. I am looking for a photographers opinion who might know. Most things on that list really don't matter much i wouldn't think for shooting internet stuff but maybe somebody that knows alot more then me might have a better idea.

I also know alot of people have the 300d and would like to know if they wish they had gotten the 10d now instead.

canon 10d! i almost made the mistake of getting a 300d...

If a couple hundred more isnt gonna break the bank go up. I am gonna get the new canon markII shortly and keep my 10d as a back up camera.

I've got a 10D and it's an excellent camera. The digital rebel seems to be a very high quality camera for the money. FOrget about all the custom functions and crap. The most important thing is megapix and autofocus. Get the camera that shoots the quickest so that you capture the moment best. Efficiency is of the upmost importance when photographing models. The quicker you get the shot, the more useable film you can take in the shortest amount of time. This is why canon kills all of the other digital cameras - Autofocus. Most sports photographers use canon. Also, Canon USM series lenses focus the fastest and most accurately.

We have been shooting with the 10D for over a year or so now...We used two for the magazine when I was publishing it....trust me when I say...the 6.3 mega pixel is two page spread full size, high end magazine quality print!

I agree with the others too...it all depends on what you are looking for when shooting. If you just need a quick point and shoot for the shows and also amatuer style shooting...then don't worry too much....the lower quality sometimes the better when it comes to amatuer style shooting.

If you are looking for the bells and whistles, the 10D has it just about what any pro is looking for in a digital slr camera.

I am looking at upgrading to the Mark II as well. Just read a review about it the other day.

Also....I totally agree on the REAL Canon USM lenses too...that is all we will buy....it is amazing how many people go out and get a great camera then go cheap on the lenses...you might as well not get the camera then.

You need to deside what is best, low cost or high end and quality.

Oh....let's not mention all of the learning I hope you have experienced already to be able to maximize the effectiveness of having such a great camera.

Let's talk lighting, filters, whitebalance, warming effected, etc.

Good luck though...it is a great camera!

Oh...last word of advise...if you are looking for the best deal on the net...make sure they say it is Canon USA - that is important...otherwise you could get the camera and it doesn't have a warranty or isn't in your language or the settings are not US standards...then your fucked. There is a HUGE gray market out there right now, don't get sucked into it or you will regret it.

becareful where you buy them that cheap... if it's a website look them up on http://www.resellerratings.com/ a lot of those places advertising really cheap are scams..

I have a 300D, and I now wish I had purchased a 10D instead for a couple of reasons...

- the film body that I purchased after it is basically the film version of the 10D, so it would have been nice to have both bodies with similar control layouts, custom functions etc.

- the amount I've spent on lenses so far almost exceeds the purchase price of the camera. I plan to buy at least a couple more in the future. If I had known this in advance then the price difference between the 300D and 10D would have seemed much less significant.

Apart from that the 300D is a great camera. Performance-wise you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between an image taken with a 300D and a 10D - they use the same image sensor and electronics.

What are you planning to use it for? That's the most important question we need to ask you.

rowan you know there are quite a few firmware hacks out there for the 300d don't you? I found quite a few while researching both cameras.. hit up google they shouldn't be too hard to find. They will allow you the ability to pull some of the extra 10d features out of your 300d.

Yes, the 300D is a bit more plasticky and a little less appealing (I don't like the silver look... Japan is now selling a black 300D)

The 10D shoot at 3 fps for 9 frames, the 300D shoots at 2.5 fps for 4 frames
If you need to shoot successive frames that fast then this is relevant.

The 10D has ISO up to 3200, the 300D has ISO up to 1600
ISO1600 is already quite noisy (random speckles of green, red and blue), although if you are shooting for the web (ie shrinking the image dimensions) then this will help reduce the apparent noise. You'll only need to use these really high ISOs if you are shooting in very low light, or want to capture sharp images of very fast motion.

The 10D has a PC socket for flash, the 300D doesn't
Again this may not be relevant unless you have professional flash units

The 10D has a rear control dial, the 300D doesn't
I've found the rear control dial on my film body to be too easy to twist as I pick up the camera or move my hand, so it stays switched off most of the time.

The 10D takes the same grip (BG-ED3) as the other Canon DLSRs, the 300D has it's own grip
Really only relevant if you already own this grip. You may not even need a grip (which holds extra batteries)

The10D takes the RS-80N3 remote (same as EOS-3, 1v, 1D, 1Ds), the 300D uses the RS-60E3
Again... unless you already own the remote does it matter?

This could be an issue if you're doing "no second chance" photography in very low light. The image in the viewfinder will be harder to see.

This is correct. There is hacked 300D firmware that does enable several 10D custom functions though. Have a look at the 10D custom function list and decide how important they are.

Yeah, I know about those. I'm not game to try them yet, the only thing that I wouldn't mind is the mirror lockup which lets me squeeze a bit of extra sharpness out of a tripod shot. I use the film body for those types of shots so it's not really important for me at the moment.

300D = 6.1MP
film body + slide + high qual scan = 40MP

This has been very helpful.

I only shoot for my websites and mostly amateur style. I am by far not a great photographer and probably most of the special features would get unused. I really need to just upgrade the quality of pics I am adding to my sites so either is a huge difference for me. The 300d looks a bit simplier and might work better for me to start out with. If nothing else I can always upgrade again and have it as a backup. I can take the extra money and buy a couple nice lenses and that should make a world of difference.

Thanks everyone I guess it's time to hit Ebay and find me a camera.
If anyone that is wanting to upgrade and is selling there camera let me know cause I need one pretty soon my last camera died thursday.

i have the 300 and i love it... also there are some spots on the net that you can flash upgrade your camera and unlock many of the features that are in the 10d...

The 300D sounds fine for what you do. I leave mine in "P" mode (auto exposure) most of the time. It's basically a point and shoot mode, except you can change things like the ISO speed and exposure compensation. In full auto dummy mode (green square icon) the camera decides everything, including whether to pop up the flash... you'll probably stay in this mode for about 30 seconds before it pisses you off enough to switch to "P"
