The Butterfly Effect.......?

OK we watched both the theatrical version and the directors cut of the movie and still don't know what went on.

Was Evan in a coma after the first hit? Did Kayleigh die? Did Evan loose his arms or was it a vision?

Was what happened based on the present or the past?

discuss

If you watch the movie again, it will make more sense.

Like when you watch something for the second time, like Momento, you catch things you missed the first time around.

One movie that was kind of lame but had such an awesome ending that watching it the second time around was really cool was that movie with John Cusack, Identity. It wasn't made well, the whole movie nothing seems to fit together, really choppy, but it totally comes togther in the end.

I liked this movie

To answer your questions:

1) No he wasn't in a coma, he suffers blackouts.

2) Kayleigh did die in one reality, however he changed that and went into a new reality/timestream where she didn't.

3) He did lose use of his arms until he was able to change realities/timestreams again.

4) Well it all goes back to the point of the movie. He was a mistake. He never should have existed and as such he finally corrected things in the end.

This is more a sci fi movie than a "what if" movie. ie: the whole movie is not a bad dream that never happened.

Now go watch it again.

I think the main meaning of the movie was that you can't play god. Everytime he tried to fix something it ended up being worse.

hmm , makes me wonder
Epilogue
"Eight years later" - Evan is working in New York, talking on a cell phone with his mom. He passes by Kayleigh on the street who does a double take as she passes by him, he does the same a moment later but misses her glance. It appears that although they were never together in this timeline, there is still some connection between them.

but they knew each other while they were kids ! so the stroke "It appears that although they were never together in this timeline, there is still some connection between them." is totally uncorrect

Huh? That's funny. The entire basis behind "sci fi" is the question what if? If a story posits a what if scenario it's probably science fiction. Please don't make the mistake of thinking a movie is sci-fi because of technological trappings. Most so-called sci-fi movies are simply action movies in a futuristic setting.

The Butterfly Effect is pure science fiction and quite good at that . . .

This was in fact one of the best movies i have seen in a long time, (As with Bad Santa lol) Now, as for what it was about, I want to take the stance of not ruining it for peeps who have not seen it yet, but I Will say take a few minutes and do some reading about "Chaos Theory" If you know and understand that you will totally get the movie, go back and watch it a 2nd time

That's not what I meant. Obviously I didn't clarify enough. I mean to take it as a serious scientific possibility, as it's suggesting itself. It's not some lame cop-out movie where he wakes up at the end and it turns out it was all a dream. You need to take the events together as if they all happened and they have a cumulative effect.

*sigh* never mind.

I liked the butterfly effect alot because it made me think about how if one event in my life were different how much everything would be different now.

I also liked secret window but only because of the ending, i thought that it would be the same as every other movie like that but it had a nice surprise.

The Butterfly Effect movie is based on the book. You've seen many representation of it, one in "The Simpsons".
He goes back in time change a little thing and they always end up screwing the future even more. I think in the original story, he goes back in time and kills a butterfly and it fucks up the whole future.

Really? I assumed it was referring to chaos theory: that a butterfly flapping its wings in Tokyo can cause a hurricane halfway around the world, through cumulative causes and effects.

That Simpson's Halloween episode is EXACTLY what I was thinking of while watching the movie. I kept expecting him to look around and say "good enough".

Yeah, it's great that they didn't cop out with this "it's all a psychotic dream" shit. OTOH, they didn't suggest time travel as a serious possibility. It was a clever story. If they meant it to be taken as a serious possibility, as in some hard science fiction, a plausible sounding mechanism for time travel would've been offered. Staring at some words in a journal is not a plausible mechanism. ;-)
