Do Japanese people in Tokyo speak english very well? Is it a 2nd language easily spoken or is it about 50/50? I've always been curious. The closest I've been to Tokyo so far is the airport.

I'm guessing it all depends on who you talk to.
The stereotype seems to be, if you don't have a job that involves learning English, then odd's are that you wont be speaking English to them =D\
.. Just take a look at some of the clothes -> Engrish.com
Good stuff.. I really really should head out there soon.Comment

Good point but in the business world, Americans speaking Japanese is to the Japanese speaking english. Really, only some business men actually start speaking it. Or if you live near the Naval/Marine base on OkinawaOriginally posted by Abyss_Vee

No, they don't. And those that do are very reluctant to do so out of fear of insulting your language. The younger crowd, especially around universities are more willing to try...to test and improve what they're learning in school.Comment

The rich often times spend money on american's who move to Japan for programs to teach english, so try to find those who have money and they will speak english better. I deal in Japanese media and high performance automotive so it is important that I learn. Hey Hanii hit me up sometime, I may have a proposition for you.even ADULTS need TOYS

For the most part, Japanese people don't speak english, however, they can read some english. For the most part, if all you speak is english, you are pretty much gonna suffer.
Go outside of Tokyo, and you are REALLY in deep. :-)
I love Japan.

I have found that the farther you get from Narita airport, the worse the English gets (and it ain't that good at Narita.) The best English in Japan is actually spoken in a small town in Ehime-ken called Shigenobu, but that's only because they had me for a teacher.
