$20 PayPal'd to help me solve this tech question

Ok, every time I visit a page with J-avascript (and sometimes pages without it), I get the following IE error pop up:

"An error has occurred in the script on this page. Object expected"

Yes, I have run latest versions of Adaware, PestPatrol, and Spybot S & D.

Yes, I have unchecked the "Display Notification For Every Script Error"

Yes, I have reinstalled IE.

Yes, I have formatted C:\.

Other weird symptoms: Selecting View Source from the top menu doesn't do anything. Right-clicking on the page and selecting "View Source" allows me to correctly view the source in Notepad. A similar thing happens with the Print function (greyed out under the File menu, works fine under the right-click context menu).

Running latest versions of IE 6 and every patch/update for my OS (Windows 2000 Pro).

I'm guessing this happened during the removal of some spyware. It's really frustrating.

First one to correctly help me remove this problem gets the cash.

WTF, I just viewed the source on a page that didn't have J-avascript and I found this:

<s-cript language='j-avascript' src='http://127.0.0.1:1031/js.cgi?pa&r=32757'></s-cript>

go to:

C:\Documents and Settings\whatever\Local Settings

delete all temp and temporary internet files.

THEN, increase the amount of disk space you use for temporary internet files:

IE > Tools > Internet Options > General Tab > Settings (under temporary internet files heading)

Should do the trick.

About the view source problem, deleting your temp interne files should take care of that........ give it a try, maybe your scratch for IE is full, don't know if that will solve your java prob though.

that hahahahahahahahahaha thing you're seeing is off zone alarm. It appends that code to every page you visit. Very fucking anooying because it botches up dhtml and certain very viable onLoad events.

Ok, update on your suggestions:

Installing Mozilla for personal surfing is fine, but seeing as how most people use IE, Adult Webmasters need to be able to design for IE users. We must preview our sites in IE, not Mozilla.

Deleted temp internet files and double the disk size for those files from 350MB to 700MB. Still no luck.

I don't have a Local Settings folder (I know, weird huh?)

RazorSharpe may be on to something, as my original thought is that it has something to do with one of the 400 spyware/adware/popup stopper programs running in my system tray.

Still searching....

APN Philip,

everyone has a Local Settings dir, it's just hidden

Go to: C:\Documents and Settings\whatever

and then in the address bar, type in Local Settings

or copy the following and substitue "whatever" for the name of the user for your machine:

C:\Documents and Settings\whatever\Local Settings

Well it was Zone Alarm after all, more specifically the Privacy settings (had to turn it all off). Doing so stops those inserts.

Still can't view source from the View menu or print from the file menu....

Razorsharpe, what's your PayPal address?

If you can code well then you shouldn't need to preview with Internet Explorer, but rather preview with other browsers to ensure you aren't using any uncompatible coding.

Is there a children's charity you could send that money to? Even the Red Cross or something will do. Every little they get helps.

Cheers,

In theory, sounds good. In practice, not profitable.

I hate IE more than the next guy, but I'm trying to cater to the majority without having to waste time previewing my pages in the 500 obscure browsers on the market. Mozilla is gaining in popularity, but according to my server stats, still represents an irrelevant percentage of my surfers. That may vary accross sites and niches, but in my case, no thanks!

It'll save me from looking for a charity that accepts paypal so yeah, just do a paypal to impai.

Also, I agree with you about using IE. It's funny how a lot of people just jump on a bandwagon and tout the same shit whenever they hear certain catch phrases!!! IE = Get Mozilla!

Mozilla is cool and all but not perfect! It may be vastly standards compliant now but not too long ago, the only browser that rendered "almost anything" without crashing was IE.
