I've been there on several occasions... as a matter of fact it's the Bling Daddy's favorite spot! I love to go clubbin on Puerta Plata, and usually stay a Jack Tar resort.

As with anything else, if the deal seems too good to be true it is. The reason you can buy a mansion for so cheap is because the Dominican People are largely poor. The average WEEKLY FAMILY income is roughly $20 usd.

You can buy a crib there, but if you want either running water or electricity you'll be paying about $5000 a month to the Dominican Government for the services. The government does this to attract ultra wealty that can afford to pay their "extortion" fees on services.

To answer the question, the resort areas are largely secure for Americans and Europeans. I wouldn't be out cruising Santo Domingo at night if I were you though.

(Nice huh?) I'd suggest lots of generators, an outhouse, and a potable water truck in the front yard of your mansion.

I went there on vacation and it's not the kind of place I'd want to make my home. It's poor, dirty, uncivilized, and it didn't seem terribly safe. You get what you pay for, as always.

I loved it..of course, you need to stay on the resort. I would not vernture off of it too far. It is very poor, and there are tons of beggars on the streets.

If you stay in the tourist area, then you're as safe as in Miami Beach. If you like to venture outside tourist areas, then you'd better have a local going with you or else you'll be as safe as in downtown Miami at 3am..

You can get mansions for around $100k actually, it will be far from the city, but if you like jungle living with an ocean view then you'll be in Paradise

if you're going to buy property in a third world country and you want most bang for the buck you will be buying where the natives are fairly poor by western standards.

anywhere is the world where there are poor blacks you will have personal safety problems. sorry for the politically incorrect statement, but if you check it out, it's a fact.

probably the best bang for the buck where you can actually live good and walk around the common (poor) folks without threat of physical violence is thailand.

i've been to DR.

i wouldn't own property in a country where you can't walk around after dark, no matter how cheap it is to live there.

bahamas is another bad one.

the original poster talks about buying property in a foreign country with the possible idea of living there.

my response is, if you are actually going to invest your $ in a place and live there you should evaluate how secure your rich lifestyle will be.

i'm not referring to walking around a tourist area in the daytime---in those areas you are relatively safe in any country due to police protection of tourist areas.

but suppose you want to venture down along the coast, and build a big house overlooking the ocean.

don't believe what people will tell you.

do your research, and you can judge your personal safety and crime rate just by looking at how the natives live in your area of interest.

little clues like how high off street level do they build their windows, do they have security bars on doors and windows, do shopkeepers have security systems, are people locking their cars, do you need a key to use the restroom.

these clues are the same all over the world, and all over the caribbean what you see will disuade you from making any serious investment in those places unless you never wish to venture outside your gated enclave.

My grandfather lived in puerta plata as well as other family in santo domingo -

I had an uncle live in D.R. for a couple of years and he eventually moved back here to the US.

I used to go all the time. cool to visit for a month or so. good surfing, good fishing, good food and clubs and lots of hot local pussy but only fuck the girls who are in college or have a job ect. the chicks that are poor fuck for practically nothing and the HIV is riskier. - how do you know who's who? upscale places wont let some people in because of their social standing. thats how it is there.

They have whore houses too which are usually in certain hotels which are Gov. regulated, they screen for all Diseases and the girls carry cards which also show how many guys they fucked that night.

other than that it aint worth your while dude.
it takes a while to get used to the change

the attitude is "man-yana meng"

water and elec are shutoff routinely and the phone system sucks.

everthing is imported. american stuff is very expensive

if you have money youll need some type of security (and im not talkin like a millionaire either. having a job, owning a house and a car is enough) usually a security guy is hired for the block and walks around ect. condo aint as bad but they have hired guys too.

the majority of the people are poor so do the math and use common sense.

Fuck the bahamas and jamaica, they suck. they hate whitey over there with a passion..
