Can Kittens Catch a Cold?

My cat has been sneezing for 2 days... should I be concerned? Or is this a normal cat thing? She seems normal except for the sneezing...

Usually pussy cats don't get real sick unless they have been wet. Has your pussy been wet lately?

...ok that was lame. Sorry.

Kittys can catch colds. At her age, her immune system is still figuring things out. If it is just sneezing, let her ride it out. Keep an eye on her and if you see any discharge from her eyes or nose it would be a good idea to get her some antibiotics. Also listen for any wheezing in her chest or shortness of breath.

Yes, kittens can and do catch colds. Most of the time, they just run their course and don't hurt the kitty, however, sometimes they are devastating.

If she seems normal except for the sneezing, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If she starts slowing down or becomes lethargic, take her to the vet.

Has you cat been in a kennel with other animals recently? Cats can get Kennel Cough too like dogs. They sneeze, sometimes their eyes water etc. It is an airborne infection.

Thanks so much. I will do that. She hasn't had any weird discharge from her eyes or nose... just sneezing. Maybe she's allergic to me! hehehe

Upper respiratory infections are very common among kittens. Like any newborn, their immune systems are very fragile still. My Maine Coon cat when he was a kitten had this and the vet gave him an antibiotic that cleared it up.

It could be a simple allergy thing...ya never know. But worth keep an eye on (speaking of which..is there any "crud' buildup in the kitty's eyes? another sign of infection).

Thanks... No she hasn't been anywhere but here, however I do have two puppies that went out of town with me for a couple of days. I wonder if they got it and brought it back to her...

Another thing....

Cats can get a strain of herpes( not from humans) that affects their respiratory system. Chronic sneezing can be one of the symptoms. If it clears up but comes back intermittently, have her checked. There have also been case of kitty allergies.

If the puppies had it you would probably know. Puppies give a sneeze/cough type of sound when they have kennel cough. The incubation period is short, probably only 2 or 3 days for kennel cough. You get it when you are in close proximity to other dogs who have it such as in a kennel situation. If the dogs are fine chances are the cat doesn't have kennel cough.

Are you sure the kitten just doesn't have a hairball? They can sort of sneeze for a bit before they yack it up, usually over your good carpet, your bed or in your shoe =)

get a thermometer and check her temp. you have to insert it rectally. Normal temp should be between 99-102 degrees

I'm going to give her through the weekend. Hopefully it's just a little cold. She has stayed playful. She's 8 months old. I'll call the vet if she is still sneezing Monday. Thanks so much everyone...
