Capture Card recommendations?

I'm in the market for a new capture card. My current one is an ancient Hauppage WinTV card, that is no longer recognized by any major program. Windows Movie Maker recognizes it fine, but that's about it. SO any and all suggestions and info are welcome!!

I like ATI products but their capture software leaves the files
too large.

I had their All-in-Wonder about 5 years ago and was very less than impressed. Ah well.

Well, I have firewire on my Audigy Z2, but I only have an onboard video card (Go on, laugh. Get it out of your system). So you're saying I just need to upgrade the video card to one that has a firewire plug?

5 yrs is forever in the PC world...The trouble with firewire
is not all software will find and use the camera as a source.
But to each their own..

So what would you recommend, frank? An ATI or something else?

We've always used Winnov cards - Osprey are supposed to be another good brand, but we have never personally tried them.

Canopus ADVC-100

DV/Firewire
DV Converter
Analog VideoIn

The converted DV streams are transferred to your PC or Mac via IEEE 1394 (i.Link, FireWire) and stored on your hard drive where they can be manipulated using your favorite photo or video editing applications. This device is ideal for all OHCI and DV-only capture cards for Macintosh or PC.

Proven DV CODEC Technology
At the heart of ADVC100 is Canopus's proprietary DV codec chip providing the industry's best picture quality preservation during analog-to-DV and DV-to-analog conversion.

Locked Audio Support
Other converters can lose audio/video sync when converting longer segments of video. The ADVC-100 is the first inexpensive DV converter that supports locked audio when converting from analog to digital, assuring perfect audio and video synchronization.

> High Quality (original hardware design, co-developed with NEC
> Custom hardware Codec chip (original Canopus algorithm)
> Locked Audio Support (capture long clips w/perfect audio sync)
> Analog output of NTSC color bars for reference signal)
> 4-pin DV jack on front; 6-pin FireWire jack on back
> Analog input connector on front
> Analog output connector on back

Hi Elli
Check out Matrox RTX 100 Extreme pro http://www.matrox.com/video/products...mepro/home.cfm

I have been using it for a few months now and love it.
I really like the capture software, makes it really easy to catalog all your mini dv tapes for future capturing. I also use the Audigy 2 ZS platinum card.
You can export right from the premier timeline in real-time. I also use pro coder 2 which makes it the complete editing / encoding setup for me.

What is the difference between a video card and just using firewire?

That post was in reference to my matrox recommendation I made to Elli
If you want performance from system you do not use on board video
Now go fuck your self

Basically it takes the load of the cpu, even the fastest cpu?s can not supply enough juice to give you render free encoding, especially when you use advanced 3d effects, also gives you full quality preview and real-time export to tape / disc. Something?s still need to be rendered but overall I have found it much faster myself

Elli does FAR less video work than I do and I use onboard video.

WTF do I know though? I'm just an idiot newbie....Unlike you.

Ok I worded it wrong, I?m sure you can use it but why not spend 50 bucks on a video card and get the performance benefits with your system.

Anyway I have things to do I?m not going to waste my time arguing here.

Because it's $50 that could be applied to places that it is needed. You do not need an upgraded video card for what Elli does.

Wow, thanks for the feedback everyone!

Aaron, please try to play nice, at least in my threads.

So are you saying the firewire plug on my Audigy would work fine? or no? I am confused. It's only a 800MHz PII processor with 512MB of RAM.

what camera do you have - analog or digital? If you got a digital mini-dv camera with firewire you just need a firewire port on your pc. then you can capture directly from the camera via firewire to your harddisk. it should work even with your computer.

WTF? I was playing nice. I gave you honest and good feedback then I told somebody they were wrong and they came back and cussed at me.

If telling somebody that they're wrong is a bad thing then every teacher and parent in this words should be punished whenever they do it.

Un fucking believable that you would tell me to play nice in this situation.

Excuse me Elli....He's right. You do need a new video card. In fact, you need 6 of them, 5 - 1tb hard drives, 4 firewire ports, 3 LCD monitors, 2 editing programs, and a partridge in a fucking pear tree.

Now I'm off to go fly a kite.

I apologize, Aaron. I misread (again). I need to stop skimming, I think.

Thanks for the info, I really do appreciate it. Sorry about that Aaron
