Vial mixup at the clinic

NEW HAVEN, Conn (AP) - Laura Howard says she was hoping her trip to a fertility specialist would make her dream of a second child come true. But as she was leaving the office, the doctor suddenly ran out to the lobby and called her back.

He told her of a grave mistake. Instead of being inseminated with the sperm of her fiance, she received a vial of semen from another man.

Howard learned she was pregnant on June 1, about two weeks after her visit to the clinic. She is now haunted by questions: Who is the father? Does he have any deadly diseases? Will her fiance stand by her, knowing the baby likely is not his?

``I don't sleep. I am always stressed,'' Howard said. ``My fiance is very distraught. He had no intentions of raising someone else's child.''

On Tuesday, Howard, a 40-year-old Trumbull nurse, sued her fertility specialist, Dr. Anthony Santomauro.

Medical malpractice attorney Madonna Sacco, who represents Santomauro, issued a statement Wednesday acknowledging an error was made and said the parties were trying to resolve the issues.

``Ms. Howard asked for and was given prescriptions to interrupt the insemination process,'' Sacco said. ``My client is terribly sorry that human error occurred and saddened that Ms. Howard decided not to take the medication she requested and was prescribed.''

Fertility experts were surprised and troubled by the case.

``That's extremely unusual,'' said Dr. Joe Massey, a fertility specialist at Reproductive Biology Associates in Atlanta. ``Clinics typically have a vigorous labeling system to prevent this.''

That sucks man! Fucking hell, hope she at least gets rich out of this

The worst one I ever heard ws of this couple in England, they had artificial insemination with the husbands sperm, she was expecting twins, and when she delivered one was black (the couple was white)!!!
Turns out the equipment they used hadn't been cleaned properly!!!

Easy for some to say,
personally that's what I would do.
But some people would never ever have an abortion, and shouldn't be put in the position of thinking it because of an irresponsible doctor, the only reason you should have to make that decision is because of your own irresponsibility

Ignore the abortion debate. She could have avoided any pregnancy simply by taking standard birth control. (which was provided to her) After she got home, she realized how much $$$ this baby could make her. Simple as that.

no, I think when they said "interrupt the insemination process" that IS abortion. Standard birth control can't stop something that has already started. But I do agree that it probably comes down to the money

This story reminds me of that couple from Detroit that were undergoing fertility treatments. They were a caucasian couple and gave birth to an african american baby. Someone at the lab wasn't paying too much attention obviously.

We desperately need better SexEd and/or Science classes in this country.

Emergency contraception, or "morning after pills", are just a high dosage of the common birth control pill.
If you think that is 'abortion', and somehow 'sinful', then logically you must be against ALL female birth control - because there is absolutely no medical difference in how they work. If a woman is on a regular preventative cycle, it prevents a baby with exactly the same method. Why is that hard for so many americans to understand?

Quote:
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), "Emergency contraceptive pills?act by delaying or inhibiting ovulation, and/or altering tubal transport of sperm and/or ova (thereby inhibiting fertilization), and/or altering the endometrium (thereby inhibiting implantation)" (FDA, 1997). A recent study found that most often, ECPs reduce the risk of pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation (Marions, et al., 2002). A more recent study suggests that progestin-only ECPs work only by preventing ovulation or fertilization, and have no effect on implantation
Too many people don't even know how their bodys work. It's biology, not a religious debate.

1) CamChicks is right.
2) If it was a religious thing, she would not have asked for the Rx.
3) Sure it would have been weird, but she just wants a baby, and the money.
