How do I calculate bandwidth for a stream?
I migth figure this out as I am typing....
but if I have a shoutcast stream that is 128kbps does that mean one person would be using 7680kb per minute? so, if I had a stream that was 128kbps and had 50 users for one hour, i would use 234gb? i think i figured that out, but if I am wrong let me know |

Look at your MP3's on your HD
You'll see that 128kbps averages about at 1 megabyte per minute. So a 6 minute song would roughly be 6megs, give or take some. I'm guessing 750k/minute is a better esitmate though |

its 128 kilobits/sec
8 bits = 1 byte 128 / 8 = 16k/sec 60 secs x 16kbytes = 960 kbytes or almost 1megabyte/sec if you use a more flexible codec expect: 750kb/min to 1MB/min But more useful is: 8 listeners @ 128kbps = 1Mbps kilobits/sec = megabits/sec so 50 listeners = 6Mbps and if your stream stayed that way for a month it would be 1800GB or 6Mbps
