Surfer Bitten In Half By A SHARK!

Surfer bitten in half
By Richard Shears, Daily Mail, in Sydney

A surfer was bitten in half after losing a desperate fight for his life with two Great White sharks.

Brad Smith, 29, was surfing off the Western Australian coast when a huge shark 'as wide as a car' lunged out of the water and snapped his board in half.

Mr Smith's friends could only watch in horror as he fell into the sea and another of the enormous creatures moved in on him. Experts said it was almost as if they had ambushed him.

The surfer lashed out with his fists to try to keep the sharks at bay as they came at him repeatedly. But after just 45 seconds he disappeared beneath the surface - and the water turned red.

When his body floated back up, his friends risked their own lives to go out and drag it back to shore.

Yesterday they were too upset to describe his injuries, but another surfer at Left Handers Beach near the resort of Gracetown said he had been warned: 'Don't go in there, someone's been bitten in half by a shark.'

The guy was fighting for his life. Tough guy to take on two great whites that are the size of cars.

I surf a lot, it is always sad to hear something of that nature, but the reality is that the chances of something like this happening are very minimal.

Unfortunately, these stories tend to do more harm than good. People destroy sharks due to a limited mentality.

Most of the time, Sharks mistake surfers for seals. I doubt the two sharks "ambushed" him.

Ouch, I knew I hated the water for a reason.
I'll stick to racing cars and motorcycles. So much safer.

I am a surfer and well.. you are in there domain.

It's sad... I know if I surf in well known shark infested waters I wear my wetsuit with a 8inch divers knife on the side.

1.) so I can cut my leash.
2.) Other surfers don't talk shit. about droping in on there waves.
3.) if I can pull it fast enough to detour a hungray shark.

I surf with the Dolphins, those bastards will kick a shark's ass in 2 seconds flat.

I have had them come up and bump my board and feet, then circle. They will warn you of trouble, but the likelyhood of a shark attacking is so damn low.

I am way more afraid of the LA freeways. Mostly because I share them with CA Dave and his arsenal of fast cars and fast women.

Pic of the guys board after the attack!

Fellow surfer Michael Campbell, 17, said: ?He was just a few metres away, clinging to one shark, trying to whack it and get away, but the sharks just kept going back for more.

?He didn?t stand a chance. They were too big for him to fight off.?

Cameron Rowe, 16, said: ?Everyone was shouting, ?Swim mate, come on? ? but he lost a lot of blood. There were pools of it everywhere.

?The sharks kept on getting him. Both were huge ? about five metres long.

?I saw one get him once more, then he was lying face down in the water.

?We saw the other shark coming towards us, so I caught another wave in.?

I was surfing over the 4th of July weekend in Vero Beach FL. We spotted a a couple of sharks while in the water. They didn't get too close but we stayed on alert. Found out later they completely closed the public beach about a mile away because they spotted a school of Bull sharks right off the beach.

Florida is the worst. The smaller sharks bite a lot.

How was the surf?

Any hurricane swells hitting yet? A little early I guess.

Sad indeed, but every time you step into the water you become part of the food chain.

VERY rare to get attacked and this guy put up a valiant effort.

that is one type of shark you don't want to fuck around with, the bullshark............they are the most belligerent and attack with the greatest frequency of the sharks

This is the beach where he was attacked.

Sharks are sighted pretty much weekly along the coast there in Summer but as was said earlier, you are more likely to be struck by lightning than bitten by a shark. We have films like "Jaws" to thank for permanently branding sharks as evil killers and helping to continue the paranoia against these sweet lil' critters.

Sebastion inlet is really bad for sharks.

AVG day I see about 40+ sting rays and 2-3 sharks.

Yeah SHARK as opposed to Killer Whales, Sea Lions, Barracudas and other animals. It's a double rare situation because according to the story the two shark tag teamed the dude. Every icthyologist has never heard of shark working in a team. Closest they get is a feeding frenzy. This is something to be alarmed at.

The other sea predators like Killer Whales, Sea Lions etc. rarely attack unless provoked or if their young are threatened. Been known to bite a man in half or swallow him whole. Should read the old stories from the 1800s during the whaling days. Whales didn't take any shit back then. If they couldn't flee they'd attack and fuck up a ship easy.

What's tough about it? Even the biggest wimp would try and fight them off in that situation. He didn't go out there and pick a fight with them on purpose.

Why, so more people can surf safely?

Anyhow, that's a really sad story

Great Whites are crazy mo-fo's, I watched a discovery channel thing on cannibalism in different animals and apparently the white sharks will eat their siblings IN UTERO! Now talk about survival of the fittest.

He has been! but he always lives... there was a show on the other day called "Operation Steve" or something. It's about him in the hospital and they were showing his surgery footage after getting bit by a crocidile.

Just saw the headline on MSN too... strange, apparently the guy that got eaten has a brother that is pleading for the sharks life. They're planning to track it down and kill it but he doesnt want them too.

I'd love to live close enough to have a nice ocean
view somewhere... but... being IN the water
terrifies me...
