That's mostly why I haven't done anything with them so far. But...I have looked on a bunch of ringtone sites and they're all pimping out the same tones that I've got here on my PC. So if it's not legit...lots of people are getting away with it.Originally posted by ace0r

What I don't understand is all the sites that sell ringtones don't let you charge it to your phone in the US, I assume it's cause US carriers don't allow it yet?
Also where do you get software to allow people to dial up via thier phone and download tones once they are billed?

I built a few of these at my last job. Much easier in the UK than the States.
The states *do* have premium SMS enabled now, but the rollout process is terrible at the moment. You pay 1k/month to reserve a shortcode across all the operators, or $500/month for a random shortcode. Then you have to get each operators approval to turn on the service for their network. (so you are probably going to be $3k into it before you get live on any networks)
Licensing content is a totally different beast. You need to pay royalties, and have approval from the artists (most artists give blanket approvals though). So, you need to report to ASCAP and another agency whos name I forget.
If you *dont* use premium SMS and charge via CC, it is simpler, and you can still deliver the ringtones using regular SMS messages.

i used mediaplazza and had about 140 sales with them although depending on where the people are that are buiying the returns change very much so from country to country resulting in high gains from the uk and low from us ..

This is my fav toy project for the moment - www.dsmobile.com - I have 12 adult domains that will be loaded with this backend after I'm done tweeking it out - this site is just a beta really and in the long run will upsell / brand with the studio members sites.
