Designers - What bothers you the most about Clients?

Designers - What bothers you the most about Clients?

for me

1 - Clients Not realizing what it takes to design a site - the hrs, conceptualization and revisions - clients think theres a magic button you press on the keyboard and a site appears and makes automatic changes and pretty pictures - wanting the site done yesterday.

2 - Cost and Payment - Customers bargin and or trying get something for nothing to the point of being offensive - having to wait for payment. " oh we only cut checks twice a month"

fuck you.

you wanted the site as soon as possible but when it comes time to pay, your going to make me wait?

***

C.O.D. is my policy. half up front the other half on delivery.

Communication and a Contract are the keys to avoiding most problems.

I love clients who expect to pay $200 for what took me 40+ hours to complete.

clients who have no idea what they want, give you nothing to build off of, no specs, no nothing, then come back with "thats not what I wanted".

Most of the time it's the indecision and lack of communication. 90% of the time it goes like this.

"Hey I need a foo designed"

"Ok, well what did you have in mind?"

"Oh I don't really know, YOU'RE the designer. Just make it blue and green"

"Ok will do"

3 days later...

"No that's not what I wanted at all."

That sucks followed closely by the "Hey will you design these 30 different graphics for me for $20"

soo true.

I guess the one that gets me is ...

random changes just to see what it would look like different.
and then they go back to the first one.

About clients i still can't complain.
I had no problems till this moment.
Before i get to work for them i strictly agree the price, what they want and the time i will make it. You just have to make the client need you, not you need him. So you say your rules about the payment, about the work period and everything and you don;t make any compromises. You have to think the way that if you don;t get to work for one client that pisses you off you will not get poor wiithout for example $200, and the opposite you will not get rich with $200 if you do the work and stick to your clients rules..

This is the best way to work i think...

yep i FUCKING hate that so much
these days i tell them i want a FULL DESCRIPTION (as much as they can) sent VIA EMAIL

what i also hate is when you do a REALLY good piece of work, and then when you show it to the client they deside they DONT want THAt - but now SUDDENLY they know EXACTLY what they - they want you to remove all the good bits and edit.. edit.. edit .. re-edit... Until it looks liek a russian schoolkid made it for $5
and you finally say to them "dude if you wanted THAT why didnt you just make it yourself in PAINT? "

it's not so bad if their prepared to pay the agreed price - but if it ends up looking so bad you're scared someone will find out it was YOU who deisgned it - (not to mention wasted hours) THAT is fucking annoying!

You find design rewarding or freelance work rewarding? I love to design but freelance is a pain in the ass. I started in the business doing freelance and since I've moved to doing all my own stuff years ago I've found it much more rewarding.

I had a designer buddy who had a client that would constantly micromanage and show his "friends" the design before it was finished.

So the client had a friend who was on a 56K complaining about how slow the flash site loaded. Then proceeded to say that she went to another flash site and it loaded "much faster".

Turns out that other flash site was all vector based while the site my buddy designed was based on images, which of course load more slowly.

But what the fuck are you doing asking a friend who's on 56K to visit a site that's geared to broadband.

I hate clients lol

Most of my problems revolve around money. When I give them an estimate, they think thats the final price for some reason.

I also don't like people who think they are designers and that it would be much better if you did something their way. Which you have to do, they pay you. Sometimes the design becomes so hacked up i don't even want to tag it or put it in my portfolio.

Why ask a friend? Cause they are paying you for it, and if it loads slow or slower.............. then obviously its a problem. I think thats a damn justified complaint and/or a good reason to learn vector. Either or, loading time is a pretty significant part of design.

just my 2.

I see your point man, but he was explicitly asked not to show anyone until it was done. Gotta respect that. otherwise, revision after revision will occur. My buddy has been working with flash for a 5 years now and is proficient with vector art. But the site doesn't contain vector art, thus the longer load.

i run across the same thing all the fucking time.

i actually dont give a shit anymore, i tell the client their suggestion is fucked up and the reasons why ect but in the end theyre payin so fuck it, its not worth arguing with a know it all... just take the cash and laugh about it.

you could give some of these assholes a real Van Gogh painting and they would wanna make changes.

i keep my version and put it in my portfolio and just list the url of the company.

clients that A: don't want to pay(which is why I don't do work for anyone on GFY anymore), B: think that _everything_ should be moving.
